Hi Everyone!
I am needing to replace my VCR and no intentions of getting another. I know there are several options available to me for recording. I'm not looking for HD compatibility yet, but it wouldn't hurt. What do all you enthusiasts use for your recording needs?

Scientific Atlanta 8300HD via Time Warner Cable. It comes with the monthly cable bill. It's basically a HD box and a "Tivo" all in one. It has an 80GB hard drive to allow you to pause and rewind tv, and makes great recordings. I've had 6 shows recorded on the hard drive. This is the only way to go if you are already paying for cable and high speed internet. Most companies offer similar DVR's. Some are HD compatible, some have larger hard drives, and some are junk. We're very happy with the SA8300HD.

I have the same model and the unit works very well. I get mine from Cox, my cable provider, like buck said it is usually the best option to go through your provider. I am a satisfied customer.

Add me to the list of Cable/DVR owners (renters). The cost of a decent DVD recorder is still a couple hundred bucks at least, and it doesn't do HDTV. In a few years, maybe they will have HD recorders that work as well as the built in unit on my cable box... Even then, it's hard to beat a 10 buck a month rental fee and the reality that I can simply trade up for something better as it comes along, and never have to worry about it breaking and me being stuck with an out-of-warranty product.

Downside? Well, it only works on the TV I have it connected to... but I actually have it on 3 TVs so it isn't that big of a bummer. So, I can't take it to a friends house and watch a tape/DVD. Not once has that been an issue.
