I recently purchased a new TV (50" SXRD) and of course my DVD player was so old it didn't have HDMI or even a component out. I was planning on dealing with this for a while but my wife suprised me and bought me a new one.

Sony DVP NC85H/S seen here:

This has a great picture and it is kind of nice that it is a 5 disc changer (not really needed though) but I can't help but think that the Oppo DV-970HD is able to play SACD and DVDA. I currently have only one DTS-A disc but would like the chance to get more in the future.

Does anybody know if the Sony is better in any way picture wise or should I just order the Oppo and take the Sony back?

Thanks,
Brad

Thanks for that link. What alot of info! I did see that exact sony on there but it looks like high costing sony's did worse than the Oppo. So I think I will do that thanks.

My pleasure.
In my opinion, after reading the reviews of nearly every player several times, it seems oddly slanted towards the Oppo no matter what player is reviewed.
I also felt a bit overwhelmed and at times confused with some of the reviews.

I wound up buying an upconverting dvd player by Philips for a lousy $80 bucks and $40 for a hdmi/dvi cable. This player is dramatically better than the 5 year old Pioneer it replaced and works without a glitch with my tv. I was going to buy a similar model of Sony for $129...75s I think...but what the hell I saved $50 bucks and doubt there would be that big a difference between the two for $50 difference in cost.

I think what it comes down to, if able, is to buy the unit and try it out. If you do not like it return it. I may buy the Sony and do a side by side comparison for the hell of it and return the one I do not want. BB's return policy is 30 days so I have a bit of time.
