i am set to purchase the equipment for a dedicated ht, and have decided (based on the glowing review, and the fact that my cable provider is all analog, so the upconversion is a big seller) on the denon 4306. would like suggestions for the dvd player. i really like the simplicity of the denon link system, a least from what i have read, but it looks as though it is only available on their $1400 player. is it worth it? i am only interested in video, the audio formats are a nice bonus, but the ht is what i am after.

i've got some older speakers that will get started, but any other must haves?

in addition to the dedicated ht, i will have a flat panel display in the family room. i will end up with a display panel only (most likely the panasonic th-42phd8uk). a local ht installer recommended i use a polk "surroundbar". i don't have a lot of room around the mounting position, so i'd like some feedback on the polk.

thanks

Denon link is going to be worth it if you plan to listen to a lot of multichannel DVD-As and SACDs. If you will mostly watch movies, I'd opt for the 2910 (if cost is an issue). You can still get DVD-A and SACD playback with that player, you will just need 6 analog cables.

You said video performance is the priority, so I'd probably look at the Oppo players - the 970HD and 971H. The 971 was the best rated progressive player of 2005.

If your main use for the dvd player is movies, may I suggest you go with the new Toshiba HD-DVD if its within your budget. The PQ/SQ is fantastic. I actually sold my Denon 3910 to get the Toshiba. One of the best purchase I've made for my HT.

That was going to be my second recommendation, or even one of the Blu-Ray players, though they are $1K right now. If you search the web, and here, there are plenty of threads discussing the Toshiba HD-A1 HD-DVD player. It will play and upconvert your existing DVDs.

.

The player plays both SD and HD dvds. If you have a HDMI or DVI connection to your tv then it will upconvert them to 1080i. Compared to my ex-Denon 3910 the upconversion on the Toshiba is just as good without the macroblocking issue. Now the HD-DVD's is where this unit shines.

Hey there! I recently got the Polk SurroundBar, and I wrote a review of it on epinions.com:

I obviously love it :)

Enjoy,
