hello everyone, new member.

did a search and came up with only one post that helped me, so maybe I'll ask again in hopes of getting a couple more opinions...

I'm in the market for a new, entry level DVD player - moderately priced. I would love to spend about 150 or less. It would function as a CD player too.

I've heard about the pioneer 696 coming in June. Anything else out there that people like?

umm...did you do a search in this forum? What did you search for?

I found tons of dvd player info...my goal was to keep it cheap, but decent until 2nd gen HD / Blueray players come out. DVD-A, upscaling, and dvd-r/rw being the important features.

Anyways..what features do you want? Upscaling, HDMI, DVI, SACD, DVD-A?

Personally I've been looking at (baised on info here, and reviews):
Pioneer 588a
Panasonic s77, s97
Samsung HD755-960's
OPPO DVD971H

Prices vary, but usually all under $150-$200

I just bought the Pioneer DV-585 (the 588's european cousin). It is a brilliant DVD Player and handles CDs etc. well too. Plays Divx, SACDs and DVD-audio too. Has Progressive output via component.

However, if you are fussy about CDs and Music, get a separate CD player - will make a world of a difference.

I hope this is useful.

There are several acceptable universal players available. But I suggest you take a good look at the Samsung HD 950. I own one that has been modified.

Features:
EZ View Letter Box Eliminator
White LCD
Hi-def conversion: 480p/720p/768p/1080i (HDMI/DVI compatible)
Playback Formats: R/RW, +R/+RW, CD-Audio and SVCD
Audio DAC - 192 KHz/24BH
Video DAC 54MHz/10BH
DVD Audio SACD, 6 Channel output
Connections: Component in/out, S-Video out, coax out, Optical Digital out, L/R stereo, 5.1 channel

This player has above average sound quality. It comes with a good quality HDMI cable worth up to $50. alone.
List is $249. You can find it for much less and within your budget. Good luck.

It seems a bit odd that you are recommending a player that you are having troubles with:

I guess misery does like company.

I'll sell you my Oppo for $150 + shipping.. it's only about a month old. I love it, but I really shouldn't have bought it as I need the money for other stuff right now. It works perfectly, and has the latest firmware and the new remote.
