DVD Player recommendations

I'm looking for some suggestions on a new DVD player. I currently have a Sony DVP-NS975V, which is far and away the biggest disappointment of any product i've ever purchased from Sony. This is my second unit, and it just died on me again. I am in the process of sending it back to Sony to get it repaired (which i have to pay for of course), so i need a new unit.

I need a unit that has excellent sound, and 720p upscaling to match the rest of my system (Sony XBR950, Sony STR-DA9000ES, Klipsch 7 series speaker system).

I was looking at the Denon DVD-2910 or perhaps the Samsung DVD-HD941? Any other suggestions?

If you have an HDMI or DVI input on your TV, I highly recommend the Samsung HD-941.

The remote is a little weak. You have to be in a limited line of sight and pretty close, but the picture and sound are absolutely awesome. For the price (less than $ 250) it's as good a value as you will find. :)

i do have dvi on the tv

But i connect into the DVI ports on my receiver, and i have been using a hdmi to dvi cable to date so it shouldn't matter either way.

Not to be contrary, but i thought the same thing about the Sony. Honestly, when the Sony works i LOVE it. Picture and sound are both great, so i can't downgrade from there even if it costs me more (i.e. Denon).

also, looking at the specs for the HD941, it appears that it can't play DVD +R DL disks in the unit, that is a requirement for me as well.

thanks for the note

how about the hd-950, that looks like a good step up, and it's CHEAP.. $200 from Dell??

the only issue with the HD-950 is, if I read the specs right, you will be losing SACD and DVD audio. If that's not an issue, it looks like a great player.

no, DVD-Audio is a hi res audio format.

I just got the Samsung HD841 and it was an awesome deal and a pretty good performer so far. The 950 is the newer version w/o the ability to play SACDs or DVD-A disks.

If you are willing to spend over $450 for a player I would get the denon 2910 or for around $300 you can get the Yamaha C750. but for under $100 you can get a HD841 and get an upscaling DVD player that plays just about all the formats out there.

it looks like the hd941 is the newer version of the 841, NOT the 850 to 950, is that correct? if so, would it be safe to assume that the 941 might be a better unit? the specs look real close on samsungs site.

this is getting hard to decide. i want a unit that is equal to or better than my sony, so sub $100 is out. the yamaha DVD-S1500 looks like a closer fit since i don't need a changer at this point, what do you think?

the sony c750 got better review then the s1500. i think the only things that people didn't like about the c750 was slow load times and the lack of upconversion.

there is supposed to be a s2500 comming our soon that is supposed to compare to the denon 2910 but i think that doesnt come out until june.

the samsung i got (the HD841) was $300 when it came out so it isnt like you are buting a sub $100 DVD player. I have only had it a week so I can't really say if it is awesome or ****ty, but so far I like the DVD-A and SACD playback and I played The 5th Element the other night and Appleseed(anime) last night and the picture looked great. I am using the component and not the upconverting DVI input. From what I can tell the new 951's only difference is that it had a HDMI output instead of the DVI.

here is an awesome site to check DVD specs and get some reviews....

If I was willing to spend the money i would get the Denon 2910, but I couldn't justify $500 for a DVD player when I could get a decent one for under $200
