dvd player question

I am new to home theatre and I just want to know if this is true regarding DVD players. I plan to purchase a blue ray later in the year. I have not decided how much I plan to spend yet.

I am just wondering as long as I get a decent one that has HDMI or the best available connecter at the time, would I see any difference in quality in spending 500 or 5,000.00 on a dvd player?

I have a friend who swears by pioneer elite and he always has to have the best and brags and thinks he has the best since he spends way beyond his means.

Do I need to spend a lot to get good quality on a dvd player? Or would it just be certian features I would not get with the cheaper units.

Any advice appreciated

i use a ps3 for a blu ray player and i think it is prolly just as good as a high end one... i am pretty sure that it would just be the features just because hdmi will send 1080p signals just as component will send 720 signals all the time so if you do see any difference in quality it would prolly be very minimal. hope this helps

You dont have to spend alot to get good performance, there are better models out there than the ultra affordable ones but thats natural. If your not a gamer dont get the PS3 as fan noise is not going to be appreciated and units are now avaliable for less than $300. As for your friend I would add there are far more expensive and better performers than Elite so ignore him, Elite is upper mid-fi gear and I am just saying dont get caught up in whats best as it impresses nobody but the person who owns it. I would dare to guess part of you thinks he is an idiot when he brags about his gear, dont become that guy!

Nope, you don't have to spend such amounts.
He is biased of course, no matter how you or he slices it.:D

Now the question will be how large of a TV and how far away will you be sitting for that bluray player setup?

Your friend probably buys Monster cable too....hahaha.

Anyway, the others are entirely correct. In terms of regular DVD players today, you can spend very little and get excellent players. When it comes to Blu-ray however, I'd spend a little more and go with a mid-level one, say $400-500 range and that should get you a very decent player.

By the way, Pioneer settled a very large class action lawsuits over the poor quality of their players.

If you are planning to spend $400-500 you should just get a Blu-ray player (skip DVD players all together). Blu-ray players play and upscale standard DVDs.

If you are looking for DVD ony, take a look at www.oppodigital.com These are simply the best players you can get for the price, and they are all within your price point. I do agree however, if you are looking around $400-500, I'd be looking Blu-ray also. Oppo says they will eventually release a Blu-ray player also.
