My Sony has been providing some indication of video drop offs. Last Saturday night, near the end of a movie, it pretty much quit playing :(

So off to circuit city to buy an expensive Hitachi, at $53 (didn't I say I was cheap? :) ) They were out, so I stole the kids really cheap polaroid VCR/DVD player and was immediately impressed by the improved sound.

Using Digital Coax cable, both boxes were set to digital output, my Sony 995 Receiver indicated DTS 3/2.1 Digital Signal.

I'm confused, how can a moderate priced DVD player sound worse then an el cheapo player. Isn't digital digital? Receiver gave absolutely no indication of a diff.

Via digital there shouldn't have been much of a sound difference. It could be just that there was an actual problem with the Sony player that also affected the audio, since it was obviously giving you problems. There is also the possibility that the Sony player was not configured correctly.

Based on the amount of time recently spent "tweaking", it was probably configured properly. 5.1 came out 5.1. DTS signals played properly and sounded good. For some reason the new player sounded even better. Doesn't make sense to me! With the system sounding as good as it does, it's funny watching the dogs responding to specific speakers :) Hoefully the cheap DVD ordered will still sound good

By better, I am thinking you actually mean slightly louder. The output is probably slightly higher or compressed.

Sony SUCKS!!!

Just another reason for me to hate Sony! I swear, EVERY piece of Sony equipment I have ever bought has taken a crap on me at one time or another, (Walkman, Mobile ES amp, Receiver, Car Stereo). I will NEVER buy another Sony product EVER again!!!

I bought a super cheap Hitachi. It hooked up fast, took longer to untagle the F$%%$ cables then it did to install the unit. From start to finish, including a quick test took a whole 20 minutes. Dolby Digital and DTS are turned on, receiver recognizes the signal.

Didn't have any time to play, as I had to go watch my youngest excel in yet another sport. Girl is absolutely amazing. Swimming, league finals, swims in four events, gets a gold, silver, and bronze! I couldn't stay and didn't have an opportunity to ask the coach, but suspecting the team won the event. They have another girl on the team that's a prodigy. We jokingly call her speed racer :) Think the middle school team has 4 or 5 girls in my daughters range, plus speed racer, who is at nearly high school record levels, they'e won every other team event this year.
