I'm currently looking into getting a new DVD player and a new TV. My question is which one to get first. I'm also working on a budget of $500 max for each. And also I need a few suggestions. This is what I'm looking for:

TV
20" or greater
DVI or component input(s)
Preferably flat screen
Pregressive scan (does this even matter for a TV??)
HDTV
16:9

DVD
DVI or component output
Coax and/or optical output
Progressive scan

All suggestions are welcome, and if I need to revise my chriteria, I can.

Francious70, get the DVD first. That technology is mature and prices have dropped about as far as they're going to. TV's on the other hand, are going through a transformation from low-resolution tube to flat screen high definition, and prices are still on the steep part of the down curve. Net result: putting off your TV purchase means you'll likely get a bigger TV for the same price later.

Would an X-Box be an acceptable choice for a DVD player?? They offer 720p and 1080i at 16x9 with 5.1 and a HD pack.

the XBOX does a decent job of playing dvd's,but it only outputs 480i in
the movie mode

my opinion being your TV will be the main attraction-center piece-of your
home theater and more than likely the unit you will keep the longest.

Based on that therory,I would suggest you take the $500 from each and apply
it towards a nice TV of your liking.

you can buy a dvd player that does a good job for very cheap now a days

one of the 'upscaler' (720,1080) output players are interesting
and the future holds "HD-DVD" players also

just my thoughts :)
