DVD player hook-up question

I am new to this format and this is my first post.
I have a question about hooking up my Pioneer DV-588s DVD player to my Onkyo TX-SR600 receiver and Panasonic CT-27SX12 TV.
I currently have the 5.1 channels from the dvd player to the receiver. I want to be able to watch a dvd without having to turn on my receiver. If I use the 5.1 outputs to the receiver AND the 2-ch outputs directly to my TV, will this work?
I also have the optical digital out from the dvd to receiver.
Thanks.

You can connect the DVD player directly to the television using the 2 channel output even with to other outputs being used.:)

Do you use the DVD player for DVD audio and SACD titles? If you don't it is redundent to have the 5.1 analog outputs connected to the receiver.;)

Absolutely, that's what I do. One note, on my system having both TV speakers on and my 5.1 on at the same time sounds horrible.

Delay or just overwhelming tv speaker crappiness?:D
