DVD player hook-up question

I am new to this format and this is my first post.
I have a question about hooking up my Pioneer DV-588s DVD player to my Onkyo TX-SR600 receiver and Panasonic CT-27SX12 TV.
I currently have the 5.1 channels from the dvd player to the receiver. I want to be able to watch a dvd without having to turn on my receiver. If I use the 5.1 outputs to the receiver AND the 2-ch outputs directly to my TV, will this work?
I also have the optical digital out from the dvd to receiver.

You can connect the DVD player directly to the television using the 2 channel output even with to other outputs being used.

Do you use the DVD player for DVD audio and SACD titles? If you don't it is redundent to have the 5.1 analog outputs connected to the receiver.

Absolutely, that's what I do. One note, on my system having both TV speakers on and my 5.1 on at the same time sounds horrible.
