Recently our samsung 3D blu-ray player hdmi cable was accidentally disconnected from our av receiver. We didn't realize it until we tried to watch a dvd. As soon as we realized the problem, we reconnected the hdmi cable to the av receiver; however, we get no video and sound that fades in and out from the speakers. We tried a different hdmi cable, tested the dvd player on another tv, and also connected the dvd player directly to the tv without the av receiver and all of these tests worked so we know it's not the dvd player or the hdmi cable. In addition, we tried to use a different hdmi port on the av receiver but no luck. The tv is connected to the av receiver and we get both video and sound.

If anyone can offer any advice, it would be greatly appreciated. We are not experts, the surround sound system was set up by a professional but we have some technical knowledge.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

I don't have a quick easy answer for you. The manual on the Sony didn't give me as much info as I was hoping, and I have no hands on with this model of Sony. First I would double check all connections. Check the setup on-screen display and make sure the settings did not get changed. Typically the receiver should save these settings but you never know. If the installer is local give them a call and see if they can help. Sony customer service may be able to help as well. If you feel like going through a back and forth Q/A I'll try and get you through this.
1. is the dvd player connected to the t.v. hdmi or the receiver hdmi?
2. which hdmi in on the receiver are you connected to. 1-4
3. are there any other connections from the blu-ray to the receiver or t.v. any other audio cables?
4. you get sound and picture on the t.v. watching cable?
5. do you have a surround speaker setup? is it 5.1 or a sound bar.
Im hoping it may be a simple setting but without knowing how its wired or being able to get a better picture for your setup its not just a quick answer. Im also hoping some of the gurus on this forum who maybe know the receiver first hand can chime in.

If the connection was made or broken when things were powered up it may have damaged some electronics.
Even though HDMI cables were designed to be hot swappable, I don't believe all equipment was designed that way.
In practice it's best to avoid hot swapping HDMI whenever possible, it can potentially destroy port electronics.

4. you get sound and picture on the t.v. watching cable?
4a. Is your cable tuner hooked up to your receiver via hdmi? If not, do you have another video source you can at least temporarily connect to the receiver via hdmi to make sure your receiver's hdmi board / timing logic isn't fried?

Thank you everyone for your replies. We get sound and picture from the t.v. when watching cable. The dvd is connected to the receiver hdmi 1. Cable box is in receiver hdmi 3. No other audio cables from blu ray or receiver to t.v. We have surround sound set up. We tried connecting the dvd player to the other hdmi connections on the receiver but still get the check connected device's power, cable connection, and source selection message. Is it possible that only the hdmi 3 connection on the receiver is working and the other 3 are fried?

First turn the power off to everything and hook your blue ray up to hdmi 3. You may have to change an input setting, and see if you get pic and sound.

Okay powered off everything. Hooked blu ray up to hdmi 3, changed input but still no picture or sound. Just black screen on t.v. with no signal message - check connected device's power, cable connection, and source selection.

You say your cable is HDMI also and it works plugged into one of the receivers HDMI inputs. You know that works at least.

Have you tried that into your all your receivers HDMI inputs? Try that. Maybe you fried an input. This should tell you

But, yeah, power everytthing off when swapping cables. ...any time, not just now.
