We just got a Westinghouse LVM42W2 at work and plugged a standard dvd player to it and it displays in a window that leaves black panels on both the sides and the top and bottom when playing a standard widescreen dvd. So I bet we need to get an upconverting dvd player to fill the screen and I wonder which one is the one to buy that would be inexpensive, maybe the Oppo OPDV971H?

Not sure what DVD player you own currently, but you should go into the setup menu of your DVD player and tell it you now own a 16:9 display, not a 4:3 display.

Then look at the image and decide if you need/want a new DVD player.

FYI: Most widescreen DVDs will leave black bars above/below your image.

See: http://www.avintegrated.com/aspect_ratios

Now, if you have a POS DVD player, upgrading to something decent may make a lot of sense no matter what.

thanks for the tip and the link to the aspect explanation, we hooked up an XBox 360 and set it for 1080i and the intro to gotham racing is pretty incredible.

The apex dvd player from walmart will have to go...

FYI: Apex players, while extraoridinarily cheap, often have ways to disable copy protection on the output which you may find of use at some point. I wouldn't throw it away for sure. ;)

I installed the HD Directv package and it sure looks nice on the LVM42-w2, unfortunately that ate up the only HDMI connector so if I get an S97 dvd player I will also have to get an HDMI switch.

Or you can get the Pioneer 1016...it's on sale at onecall.com for $414.99, if you're into Pioneer and could use a new receiver. It has 2 HDMI inputs and one out to the TV. I might have to do that one of these days if I get a DVD player with an HDMI output rather than a component output.
