DVD Player dying, what to get?

I've got a Pioneer dv578a that is starting to act weird, screen goes out, won't read discs. I tried cleaning it, didn't help. So the question is, should I buy a Denon 2910 refurbished for around $400 or a bluray/hd player for a couple hundred more, or try to pick up something like what I have now and hold out a little longer? ( I've been wanting to upgrade for over a year, but wanted to wait til the new players got settled in).

Recommendations?

Thanks

Jack

how about an oppo? it would do pretty well for holding ya over while the blue ray and HD dvd players make their appearance. I really am not a fan of buying new technology. I have been reading about alot of bug issues on the Toshiba HD players.

I agree with scenaria, you should probably hold out and just buy a simple dvd player for now. Let the format war settle and let the manufactures fix the bugs/problems on the players with the first generations of the new technologies before buying them. I wouldnt want to spend $400 on a dvd player now and then spend another $700 or so in a year on a new HD/BluRay.

That's been my mentallity for the past year or so. I was going to buy a 2910 early last year to upgrade what I have now, but didn't want to replace it when the new formats came out.

I really want a better player than what I have, and I'm not sure how long it will take for the formats to be decided. If its going to take two or three years, I might buy the Denon, if its going to take a year, it's not worth it.

So I guess the real question is how long do people think it will really take for the format wars to be decided?

My DVD player went belly up a couple weekends ago and I've been deeling with the same issues. I finnally decided to stopgap the situation and pick up the movie kit for my Xbox. $30 holds me over at least for a while. Not sure if you can do something similiar but it will at least get you through.
