I gave my old BD player, a Sony S350 to my girlfriend and hooked it up to her Sony KDL 32L5000 TV using HDMI. Last night we tried watching a movie from my Alfred Hitchcock box set. We were seeing a picture but no sound. The disc info showed DD 2.0 @ 48 kHz. I checked the player settings. It downside everything to stereo for the TV.

Prior to this I'be had no issues playing DVDs on this player. I tried 3 of the 4 discs in the volume I had with me. All were silent. I know at least a couple of those discs work because I've watched them on my home system. We tried some other discs and they played fine.

Are there compatibility issues with some DVDs? Can you think of anything else I could check?

Man, I am stumped. Is this the box set?

It says DD 1.0 (mono). Is the player confused by trying to "downmix" 1 into 2 channels?

If it worked at your place . . . well I assume 2ch downmix was not enabled there . . . so maybe this has something to do with it?

Hmmmmmmmmmmm.

Have you tried either S/PDIF or analogs directly to TV instead?

It's the Alfred Hitchcock Masterpiece Collection. It's DD 2.0 although I'm sure many of the films are mono. We have to rely on the TV for sound. I'll see if I can hook it up another way. I probably have some extra analog cables laying around.

It would likely be a setting if it were all discs, but since it is only those, it is really tough to say. Have you tried other audio settings on the discs themselves just to see what it does with the downconvert?
