DVD Camcorder and Playback on 16:3

I have just purchased a new camcorder and recorded something in 16:3, took the MiniCD out of the camcorder, placed it into my DVD player at home and it plays back with the bars at the top and bottom. Picture is squashed.

I am still pretty new to 4:3 vs. 16:9, etc.

I would like to record this with as high quality as possible but also play back on my TV full screen.

Should I just record in 4:3?

If you have the option for two aspect ratios with the camcorder and your TV is the old fashioned 4:3, then yes, you would have to record in the same format. But, that will have bars on the sides in a 16:9 tv, unless you instruct it to stretch it that will distort that picture.
So, you can only win when the recorded and playback TV are at the same aspect ratios.:D

Thank you, but still need some help

I am doing something wrong. I recorded a video in 16:3, put it in my other DVD and HD TV, fired it up and it shows in full screen.

I put it in my home theater system and it shows with lines at the bottom and top. CD player, projecter (verified it is in 16:9).

Any suggestions on what I am doing wrong?

thanks

You keep writing 16:3...do you mean 4:3?

1) What is your screen size?
2) Are you certain you recorded in 4:3? Because unless you have some screwy native resolution or screen size, bars (not lines) that take up almost half of the screen reeks of 16:9 being displayed on a 4:3 screen.

Thank you, here is a little more information

Here is a little more information.
First I am recording the DVD onto a Cannon DC210 in widescreen. 16:9.

I am then finalzing the disk, and play on cheap DVD player onto my Sony HDTV. It plays in full screen. No bars across the bottom or top.

I take that same disk, play it on my home theater. Onkyo Receiver, Screen Play projector and Tohsiba dual VCR/DVD player and it plays with the bars across the top and bottom. I have component cables running from the DVD Output jack in the back of the DVD player into the Onkyo.

Then I plug my Cannon DC210 directly into my Onkyo Receiver and it plays in full screen mode. So the issue appears to be with my Toshiba DVD player. Any thoughts? I don't see where I can make any changes to the settings on the DVD player.

I would like to take these Mini-DVD and put them on larger DVDs but want to make sure I can view in full screen first.

thanks

Yes, your HDTV is also a 16:9 screen, so it is filled up.

How is the toshiba DVD set up and at what resolution output?

Some look for anamorphic discs to properly display and ordinary non-anamorphic will be projected a bit differently.
Also, would suggest you physically measure the on screen size with that dvd, width/height and see if it is a 1.77 ratio?

May have to use zoom on the DVD player.
