Are there any devices (OPPO, etc) that will play discs encoded for any region? Sometimes I read about discs that work in 'Region 1 or A players only'. I mean if blu-ray players will play blu-rays and DVD and CD, why not a "universal" player?

You can buy region free players like this one.

I was about to link you to SlySoft anywhere DVD. However I see they have just been shut down. That is what I use.

Dang! It is a shame to lose SlySoft!!!

Many BDPs can be hacked to run region free. For some it is a hardware hack (i.e. install a chip), for others it is a software hack (i.e. a particular sequence of buttons to unlock menus, etc). For this, Youtube is your friend.

I read yesterday that they are back under a new name and honoring their old subscriptions. I haven't verified any of this and I'm not trusting enough to download updates until I do, but it's interesting to see that they are still at it, and I'll be equally interested to see how long they last.

  • AnyDVD reborn! SlySoft is dead, long live RedFox!
  • This is an intermediate release, so old customers can continue to use their existing AnyDVD license to watch their discs.
  • This version can access the new RedFox Online Protection Database
  • This version will only work, if already own a valid AnyDVD license
  • For compatibility with 3rd party programs, AnyDVD will still use "SlySoft" for directories and registry paths
  • It will replace an existing SlySoft AnyDVD installation
  • New (Blu-ray): Support for new discs
  • Some minor fixes and improvements
The fox is not completely back yet, but on it's way...
