Johnny Cash has an album called Silver and is available in DVD-A or SACD. Any recommendations on which version I should buy?
I have a nice Pioneer system but I have never had this choice before.
Please help me by giving me reasons, I am quite new to multi-channel.
Thanks

I usually opt for the SACD because more often than not they sound better (to my ears), but the DVD-A will probably have at least a little additional content on the DVD-V portion.

And you can get SACD hybrids sometimes and you can use them in your car also.

Usually if both are available I choose the cheapest one. Call me cheap but the savings adds up over time. I will have to say I agree on the SACD being more flexible. So if price isn't a factor I would pick SACD.

I don't like carrying my sometimes expensive SACDs around, so I normally burn the CD layer and keep that with me.

Buy the one that offers the 5.1 channels of music. Not all
SACDs are 5.1. DVDA are. Make sure your player will play both and your sistem is set up for the 5.1 channels as it will need additional connections.

If they are recorded properly, it should not matter which format you buy.

DVD-A v. SACD

Hi,
Thanks everyone for your advice, I'll go for the SACD.
Do I have to do anything special when recording a personal copy for my vehicle?

I use Slysoft Clone CD or Nero, I know it will be a flat copy.
Should this be a new subject?
I hate being the receiver of replies telling me what a naughty person I've been.

Also where do I navigate to inform that I would like to know of if there is a reply to my question?
Once again thanks
Regards
Bee

Not sure if the discs will let you copy them at all.

You can copy the CD layer off of the SACD just like a regular CD. However, there is a chance that the CD layer is a different mastered version or mix than the SACD layer. You can not rip SACD. If you want the SACD version, you will have to record the analog stream from a SACD player with a soundcard and then manually edit/tag the resultant files, then burn to CD-R.

Did Johnny Cash ever record in multi-channel? :)

Seriously, I think that with the impending release of the blu-ray/HD-DVD formats (featuring TrueHD) in six months that these formats are already obsolete. TrueHD is lossless 24/96 and every single new Blu-ray or HD-DVD player will support the format. Why would labels continue to release in SACD or DVD/A at that point?

Even Sony's own SACD releases have slowed to a trickle.

When your talking about Audio formats, impending release can be a very loose word. Gee,why do they keep making cd's?

SACD and its a hybrid will work in your car and DVD-A if it has DTS to is good to have.

I don't think DVD-A will be going away anytime soon, however, I am not so sure about SACD. Both of them need to get more stuff out and not follow Atari's pattern by coming out with a good game system then not providing software for it. Having the best format in the world does one no good when there is nothing available.
