Reported at Twice,

The retail version of BOSE, purveyor of expensive junk has filed for protection from creditors. Maybe BOSE can lend them some money.

"Wilmington, Del. — Specialty retailer Sharper Image has filed for Chapter 11 protection at the U.S. Bankruptcy Court, here.

The company, known for its proprietary electronics devices, said it is in a “severe liquidity crises” and will shutter 90 of its 184 stores and sell off unprofitable inventory in an effort to conserve cash. It had total assets of $251.5 million and $199 million in total debts at the close of its most recent fiscal year, ended Jan. 31.

Sharper Image’s sales, earnings and stock market value have cratered over the past four years after its core product, the Ionic Breeze air purifier, was vilified by Consumer Reports magazine, resulting in numerous lawsuits, while indoor malls, the bastion of its store base, lost favor with shoppers. Its executive gift-type assortment may have also been eclipsed by the advent of iPods, GPS devices and other popular and universally available portable CE products.

Also contributing to its woes were compressed margins and tighter credit terms from suppliers, the company indicated. It is seeking approval of a $60 million debtor-in-possession loan from current lender Wells Fargo to fund operations, and said Chapter 11 protection would allow it to sell off underperforming stores and free itself from unfavorable leases.

GPS device makers TomTom and Garmin International are among the company’s largest creditors, with unsecured claims of $2.1 million each.

Sharper Image’s sales have fallen for 11 consecutive quarters and losses have totaled $136 million since January 2005. During its most recent fiscal year, net sales fell 26 percent to $374.9 million and same-store sales declined 13 percent.

Founder and CEO Richard Thalheimer was ousted in 2006 after the company’s stock market value had fallen by more than 75 percent, and his successor, Steven Lightman, was replaced earlier this month by turnaround specialist Robert Conway. Jerry Levin remains chairman.

The company said it intends to “continue to conduct business as usual while it devotes renewed efforts to resolve its operational and liquidity problems” and develops a reorganization plan."

That is sad news.
Every time I saw one of their commercial or infomercials I wondered if they had the same ad firm as Bose.

I'm surprised it took that long. Even as a kid, I always thought Sharper Image was full of junk, but, apparently it did good for a while. I never found anything in there that was, from an engineering point of view, any sort of feat. I mean, they had just lots of items that were a hodgepodge of already invented and available items/gadgets. Stupid vibrating chairs, no-fog mirrors, radio controlled garbage, chargers/converters you could buy from just about anyone else for cheaper, shavers that look like they could take you to the moon... but can't even compare to a regular razor, plastic junk shaving cream heaters, bad knives, worse tools, yeah... that's Sharper Image. :D

Ironically what did them in was "THE IONIC BREEZE PURIFIER" (say that with a loud voice), supposedly Consumer's Digest did some tests on it and it turned out to be bogus (duh), but through their infomercials they would snag enough dingleberries to sell them like hot cakes. I guess the dingleberries aren't biting anymore.

"Sharper Image’s sales have fallen for 11 consecutive quarters..." Wow. That's a slight indicator if some serious issues. I can't say I'll miss the store.

Now the bigger question: What the heck is keeping Radio Shack open?

No Fog mirrors

Gadgets like $90 fog free mirrors sell like hotcakes, but why? Nothing is fog free forever.

The $90 mirrors last just a tiny bit longer than the $6 fog free mirrors at Walgreens. I'd rather replace a $6 mirror every year than a $90 mirror every two years. Guess which ones I buy?

Well, as far as I know it's still the only place I know where you can pick up 20-25 XLR connectors if you're in a pinch and need them immediately. I'm thinking it's not so much the CE that's keeping Radio Shack afloat, but rather their assortment of electronic components for tweakers, technicians, and the like.

As for Sharper Image... meh. One less place for me to doodle around in while my wife is out in the mall shopping. I'm glad to say that I never spent one cent of my hard earned money in that store, but I guess it did offer me a few bright shiny objects to catch my attention so I don't have to be dragged through the women's shoe section at Macy's. :D

I used to work for their competitor, Brookstone, and they were on their way into the toilet as well. I would not be surprised to seem them gone this year too. They will deserve it too.

You guys can poke all the fun you want.
What about all the personal lives that are effected?
So... now where do I go, when I need a $39 dollar, 6,000 RPM nose hair trimmer?
It's not like we can buy $99 dollar pepper mills anywhere!

Yup, that was my distraction at Dadeland. Some of their stuff was just ridiculously expensive for what it was. And crappy too, I was given their Men's Hair Trimmer, you know the one you shove up your nose and do a lawn job, well the blades are so bad (since new) that it would just painfully yank the hairs out, YOUCH!!! Just thinking about it makes me want to sneeze and scream at the same time. And it was so noisy that forget about using it around you ears, it was extremely loud and as I suffer from tinnitus the noise was excruciating. The only positive? Well, it's got this ultra-bright LED in front (I guess so it lights the way as you poke your nose), so now I use it as a flashlight, a damned noisy flashlight.

If it wasn't for Sharper Image or Brookstone what would us guys have to do while the wife is in some clothing store? Visit the Bose Store?

Sittin' in the massage chairs in the front of the store and watching the "scenery" walk by is considered a constructive way of wasting time. :D

I personally vote for more bars instead of jewlery kiosks in the center of the mall walkways.

I believe Bose marketing is done in-house. Surprising as their marketing is very good.

Can't wait to see all the Internet liquidators selling their junk dirt cheap. I won't buy it then either.

Sharper Image is a great example (for a time) of what you could do with absolute shite products and lots of marketing.

I knew they were in deep trouble when last year they had the founder, Richard Thalheimer, do a commercial for Ionic Breeze while he held a baby and talked about the attributes of the "air filter", they had sued Consumer's Digest and lost, CD proved the device was a crapload of expensive junk and it didn't perform as advertised.

My guess would be cell phone service and the occasional gift shopper. But, they too have greatly reduced inventory and store numbers.
