DualDisc problem/question

(I hope that's not a faux pas, but I also posted this same message on AVSforum.com.)

A few weeks ago, I purchased my first two DualDiscs: Bruce Springsteen's "Devils and Dust" and Diana Krall's "Girl in the Other Room." The DVD-A side of the Springsteen disc played fine, but I had a strange problem with the Krall disc:

There is no sound when the song tracks are played, although I can tell by my DVD player's display that they are "playing." (Incidentally, the videos on the DVD-A side of the disc play fine.)

In case it's relevant, I'm using a Pioneer Elite DV-45A player with an optical out to a Yamaha RX-V757 receiver. And, just to be clear, the DVD-A side of the Springsteen DualDisc plays fine with all of the same settings on the components, etc.

I know that there have been many problems with DualDiscs reported, but isn't it unusual that one disc would play fine and another would appear to play but without sound? If anyone has expereinced a similar problem or knows what the problem might be, I'd love to know... Thanks.

You are probably hearing the Dolby Digital version of the Springsteen disc. To pass the DVD-A from your DVD player to your receiver you cannot use an optical cable. You must connect the 6 channel (FL/C/FR/SR/SL/SW) cables from your dvd player to your receiver. This might be why you can hear one disc and not the other.

Hope this helps.

"Devils" is not in DVD-A but Dolby Digital 5.1 and will play on any DVD player in 5.1. The D. Krall is a DVD-A cd and must use the player's decoder (you must have a dvd-a player). It must be set up like rgriffin25 instructed so you get your 5.1 analog to your receiver. Just an FYI.

Thanks for the replies guys ... Being a hi-res audio newbie, I didn't know that you couldn't play DVD-A (or SACD for that matter) through a digital cable. (I've since hooked up my player with 6 channel cables.) I also mistakenly believed that the DVD side of all DualDiscs was DVD-A.
