First of all I would like to say hello. I have been looking around on your site as well as many other places on the internet and have yet to find the answer to my question.

I have a klh r7000 receiver and am using a samsung dvd-n501 dvd player. I connected them using digital optic cable. Both say that they can use dts but when I play a dvd that has dts, and set the audio to dts, I hear no sound. I can't seem to get the receiver into a dts mode. The only surround modes it gives me are:
pl2 emulation
pl2 matrix
pl2 music
pl2 movie
3 stereo
stereo

This is also complacated by the fact that I can not find the user manual for either device. I was also wondering if any of these modes were digital at all or rather just stereo and making up the surround channels?
Thanks for any help.

If both say they can decode dts than they should do just that. Sounds like your problem might be in the dvd player menu. Try going into that with no disc in the device and make sure you have dolby digital and dts enabled. You may have to change them to "Bitstream." Hope this helps

I would agree it sounds like you need to enable dts from within the setup menus of the dvd player, otherwise it won't output the dts signal even when you've selected it from the audio options on a dvd.

Seems this is becoming a common mistake as this is about the 3rd time I've seen this question crop up.

I didn't mean that you shouldn't ask. Just that other people have had the same problem, so you shouldn't feel bad about it. It's something that DVD players mfg. should consider defaulting to on rather than off.

If it makes you feel better I had the same problem with an old Kenwood receiver/Pioneer dvd player. I spent almost an hour on the phone with the tech at Kenwood and he even told me I needed to return the unit because it had to be defective. After I had done that I finally found that I had not enabled it in the dvd player menu

Ugh, now I'm kinda mad, see it's actually my girlfriends dvd player and she lost the remote. I have a universal remote that I programed but its not letting me access the setup menu. You would think it would default if only a digital audio cable was hooked up to it and the receiver could decode it. Oh well.

I have not ordered a new one yet, I might do that as soon as I get some money . . .how much would a replacement cost?
