Hello,
It may be a stupid question but here goes: When I have the option to choose DD 5.1 or DTS mode when watching a movie which one should I select? Is DTS better? What is the difference anyway? Does one sound better than the other? OK, I had more than one question-sorry. Thanks everyone

I have read some threads on the comparison between the two, and they all seem to boil down to...personal preference and differences on specific discs. DTS takes up more space on your disk which creates the illusion that there is more information decoded, or less compression than DD 5.1. I am not sure of the technical aspects behind the answer…but some movies sound better in DTS and some sound better in DD 5.1. You can listen to a few minutes of each and decide. I personally choose DTS when available.

Is Coke better or is Pepsi better? You can have a bunch of self-proclaimed experts tell you which one to drink, or you can try them both yourself and decide which one you like better.

I hope my analogy was clear :) .

Always DTS, especially if it's encoded in ES Discrete 6.1. Do an A/B comparison and decide for yourself. I've always found it to be more dynamic (read - push the envelope of distortion). :)

That is truley one of the best analogies I have heard.

jayswizz,
Personally, I usually default to DTS if there is an option, but I usually check out a brief section of the DD to see how it compares. On older movies I found the DTS to have a much better mix. On newer movies, it's hit or miss, and on some there is little if any distinguishable difference between the two. You really need to make up your own mind on a case by case evaluation and see which you prefer.

I agree with most of the above in that it might be a case by case issue and media dependent. I always use DTS if it's available just because I have always done it that way and as a consequence I don't have to ponder the "which is better question" each time I play a DVD, I just do it.

Thanks everybody. I figured it was somewhat of a personal taste type decision, I just wasn't sure. I thought taht beings DTS was the more recent decoding choice that it was a no brainer that it should be used. I will conduct my own field test in the future. Thanks again
