DTS Neural X, and Dolby Surr.

I recently bought an Integra DRX-5.3. I only have a traditional 7.1 setup, although the surround and surround back speakers are quite high up, as the design of the room dictates. Anyway, I'm wondering what Neural X, or "Dolby Surr" does for someone like me. Is it only for people watching older content that will be upmixed for having ceiling speakers? Does it do anything for having only the 7.1 setup? I'd like to know what they do.

I've been searching the net, but finding a straight answer seems impossible. I've been doing home theater since the 90's, but please explain it to me like I'm a dummy. Thanks.

The new dolby surround is better(usually, some miss the music version of PLII) even in a 5.1 setup compared to the older dolby pro logic II, it will upmix to the amount of speakers you have.

I guess one thing, is that like PLIIx the new upmixers will use all available speakers. Ime, PLII generally is more adjustable but DSU and dtsnx are more natural and overall better just how they are. So even though the older avr gives you more options, like center spread width and how much shift to the rear, you don’t really need to do all that.
So maybe I shouldn’t have said they won’t do anything, but for the investment of a new AVR, and especially if your happy, then I’d leave well enough alone.
However, if you’re inclined to, and have the room to, I would recommend adding speakers and going to Atmos. FWIW, 5.1.4 is better than 7.1.2 so you can also get away with a less expensive AVR.

On my Yamaha the DSU upmixer does a great job on 2.0 to 5.1 compared to my old Neo6 and Dolby Pro Logic II. I never had a receiver with Pro Logic IIx or IIz so unsure on those.

I did read that Dolby removed DSU center spread on the models with Dolby Height Virtualization. So far just Denon. Tha center spread is a feature I use when I want music in surround. It knocks the center down about 8dB. I guess that could be saved manually if the AVR lets you have a 2nd setting.

NeuralX I’m not a huge fan of compared to DSU. It seems to overwhelm the center channel. YMMV. :)
