No, you need HDMI 1.3 inputs and a True Dolby HD decoder.
Not if your player can decode the tracks for you (i.e. Send Multi-Channel PCM over HDMI). Any Reciever with HDMI 1.1 can take PCM. Some however, will not matrix a 5.1 PCM signal into 7.1 however (for example Onkyo 605).

As for reciever vs. player decoding, I don't have anything besides the PS3 (which can't bitstream the lossless tracks). However, I don't notice much difference when I take a Legacy DD or DTS track and send bitstream or PCM from the PS3. It sounds slightly different, but I can't say either is better or worse.

Based on this posted link, it seems like even when the receiver gets a compressed bit streamed signal, it still converts it to PCM within its self before sending it out. It almost seems like its a matter of whether or not you want PCM from the player or the receiver, which seems like either way your back to the original problem. Check it out.

Problem with getting bitstream from hd player

Toshiba HD-A35 conected to Onkyo TX-NR905

Tried all set-ups but cannot get the player to bitstream. On tv screen display shows Dolby True HD not bitstream. The receiver through HDMI shows video but no audio signal. Digital input through optic is ok, it seems the Hdmi has a problem.

Anyone got any idea what the problem is.

Are you sure you have the audio input on your receiver assigned to HDMI? Please check you set up menu.

3808 here

I have the denon 3808 and i am completely happy with it. I like the networking portion of it. I can listen to local radio stations, and others around the globe. sound quality is better for some stations then others. I like the fact that is has a USB input aswell. I just leave an external drive plugged into the back and the on screen GUI is awesome for browsing files. The only real complaint i have with it is that you can't fast forward the songs over USB. If you have any questions about the reciever feel free to give me a PM.
