DTS-ES Matrix or Discrete, that is the question

Hi

I currently own an onkyo reciever which I am very satisfied with, but I have a question. When playing a DVD with a DTS-ES soundtrack the reciever automatically plays it as a Discrete audio file. Is this common, or is it something I should look into? The sound is fine, and everything seems to be okey, I am just wondering if it really matters if the reciever displays Matrix or Discrete, or if it is all just the same stuff, but different name. Have anyone else encoutered this problem with either an onkyo or another reciever?

That is the way it should work. The DTS ES is 6.1 audio format. The difference between the Matrix and Discrete:

Matrix combines the rear center signal with the surround left and right signals and then when it is played the rear center sound is then "Matrixed" back together using these peices of information from the rear left and right surrounds.

Discrete has a discrete 6th channel just like there is normally a signal on a DVD for each the center, left front, right front, left surround, right surround DTS ES Discrete adds a signal to the disc for the rear center speaker give you 6 "Discrete" channels of information.

I love to know I am listening to a DTS ES Discrete DVD because it actually uses my 6.1 setup to the fullest extent possible.

This is in the easiest tems possible.

DTS-ES Discrete also has the contents of that discrete 6th channel matrixed into the left and right surround channels - just like DTS-ES Matrix. It is cancelled from the left and right surround channels on playback.
