I'm looking to resurrect my Yamaha DSP-2070 into the digital age. Is there a way to purchase a moderately priced receiver with 5.1, HDMI inputs, etc and use this as a "pre-amp" while still taking advantage of the 2070s power and clean sound?? I have a PS3 and a Panasonic plasma to incorporate into the mix and both the 2070 and an RX-V670 I had been using as a tuner and aux. amp. for some outdoor speakers are pre-HDMI, making connections difficult.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions and hope I'm ok posting this question here...

What you are looking for is a mid-level receiver with 5/7.1 analog pre-outs. The new receiver will handle all HDMI, audio decoding, video switching, surround processing, dsp, etc. and feed the analog audio signal to your Yamaha's 5.1 analog inputs. You would, in effect, be using the Yamaha as a separate amplifier.

I assume you meant the DSP A-2070? That's the only one I could find.

NOTE: It isn't clear to me from skimming pictures of the rear panel of your Yamaha whether this will work for 5 discrete channels. The input section is a little unusual. And that it doesn't have any digital inputs, I guess it is designed for matrixing surround from a 2 channel source?

In any case, it would work to power at least 2 speakers - the rest I'm unsure. But your new receiver will have it's own power, which you can use in part.

Yes sorry...DSP-A2070. You are correct in that there are no digital inputs of any sort. I supposed I could bring in the un-amplified feed from new AV Receiver and use it for the Matrix 3 fronts. That way, the new receiver only has to power the center channel and surrounds. That way, I don't have to plunk down quite as much coin for a powerful amp. section. And I believe the sub, B&W ASW 1000 is self-powered.

Sound reasonable?

nohav, Please list your entire equipment list to help us understand better....
but so far it sound like to get any sort of 5.1 surround you'd need to cash out for brand new receiver with enough power and basically use any old receivers/amps for 2nd zone if needed.

Please don't forget to add your budget

I would forget the Yamaha's matrixing. The tech in that thing is ancient. I think you would be better off having a discrete center channel.

If I were you, and if I were attached to using the Yamaha, I would let it power your front left and right mains - and end there.

Let the receiver power the center and surrounds.

As to the request for my equipment..here goes.. Yamaha DSP-A2070, Sony Playstation 3, B&W Matrix 3 fronts, B&W CC6 S2 center, ASW 1000 sub and Paradigm Atom rear surrounds. I also have been using a old Yamaha Receiver as a tuner for the A2070 and as a secondary amp for some outdoor speakers. Oh, and the Panasonic TH-50PX600U plasma. All this is my basement system.
I also have an NAD 5100 CD player, but might retire it if the PS3 isn't too noisy playing CDs.

Upstairs, I have a Rotel RSX-1065, RMB-1048 for ceiling speakers in other rooms, Ascend Acoustics Sierra Tower/Sierra Center, CBM 170SE surrounds, Panasonic P50GT30 plasma and BDT310 Blu-Ray..but that's a story for another day.

You're trying to play a DVD on a VHS player...

As close as I can see, that 2070 is SOTA as of the beginnng of Bill Clintons final term or so in office.

As such, it's made to operate off of a two channel analog signal. When it was made, 5.1 DISCRETE DIGITAL was still off over the horizon and it makes no provisions for it at all.

Here's a copy of the manual for anyone who is interested.

If I did pop for another AV Receiver and let the A2070 just drive the front L&Rs, what suggestions do you all have?

Anyone have any experience with the Yamaha RX-V371, or it's slightly bigger brothers?
