I just got my Athena Point 5 Speakers today and I must say they are awesome, even connected up to my htib receiver, and all for only $165 shipped! Now my questions is can I mount these directly to the drywall and not to a stud? The speakers are only 6lb each. The problem is that the bracket's screw holes are about 2" apart and the studs are only 1 1/2" wide. Another problem is that the studs aren't in the right places for proper placement. Tomorrow I'm going to be mounting these and upgrading the speaker wire. Thanks!

You know what I would do? Screw a nice piece of 3/4" finished wood about 2" high and 3" wide, 2 screws into the stud, one above the other, then fasten the speaker to that .

Another problem is that the studs aren't in the right places for proper placement.

Studs are 16" apart. I would think 8" one way or the other would not be a serious issue to get a solid fastening, even if that is so light.

A different solution, which I have used for years to mount speakers (and even my projector) are these: E-Z Mounts

They are basically a large flare white plastic screw (the anchor) that you screw into the drywall using a phillips screwdriver. They have a hole in the center that you screw the provided screw into that then acts as your mount for your speaker. You can buy them in different holding capacities - I typically use the 50 pound one or the 25 pounds. Lowes and Home Depot carry them. Just tell them you are looking for drywall anchors

Just be careful that you do not screw them in too far and strip them out. If you do, they are worthless.

If you want to do it right, take the time to cut out the drywall between the two studs, fasten a piece to wood between them, and replace the drywall that you cut out. If you visit DIY Network's web site, or visit your local Home Depot or Lowes (or other home building supply store), you will find the steps (and possibly lessons) on how to finish drywall.

Plus, while you have the wall open, you may be able to run the wires so they are hidden if they aren't already.

Patching the hole is not that difficult, it just takes time and patience to do it correctly.

I mounted one of mine directly into the drywall with just some plastic drywall anchors. It's holding up just as well as the ones that were mounted directly onto studs.

Thanks for the suggestions. I think I'll just use the drywall anchors, they're like $5 for 20 of them at home depot.

I have another question. The mounting brackets for the .5s allow them to be angled, I have them about 5 feet off the ground for the surrounds, and angled about 10 degrees down towards the listener. Is this alright? Could I do the same for the front channels?

Whenever I mount anything to non-stud section of drywall, sheet rock or 'Gypsum Wallboard' ;) I always use these plastic E-Z Anchors, they can be bought just about anywhere, come in various sizes, are very easy to install and can hold a lot of weight.

I just mounted my speakers the other day... this solution seems to work pretty well. They were these plastic screws that you hammer in about 1/4 of the way in and then screw the rest in, the screw kind of slides under the drywall. Then you have a metal screw that screws into the other plastic ones. They seem to work pretty well.
