I've looked over this forum and others and read several articles and downloaded a few "calculators" etc and now seem to have any compensation for my main listening room. While I think my setup sounds pretty good, there is always room for improvement.
I have a pair of JBL L-88 run by a HK 3480 from another room. the room is 13'2" wide and 16'6" long with 9' ceilings.
Along the left(16.5') wall is an archway 6'4" wide. Along the right is another archway 9'8" wide. The first leads into a sitting room that is about 9'x9' and the larger one on the right is the dining room which is about 15'x14' with hardwood floors. The main room is carpeted. I have the speaker sitting on top of bookshelves built on either side of the fireplace. The center of each woofer is about 40" from the side wall. On each side the archways start 15" from a line parallel to the front of the speakers. I will attempt to attach a jpg drawing.
The speakers sit about 4' off the floor on their sides. The main listening position is on the back wall. There isn't a whole lot of options as far as placement goes. Open room and a lot of doors and arches.
I guess my main question is how do I compensate for these openings? They don't seem to be a problem but the sound stage isn't the best. I've toed in the speakers a few degrees and that helps but I can't go too far because the shelf isn't that wide. When I crank the vol. they sound great but at lower levels I loose some detail. I have the l-pads set at about 50%. They were way too bright when turned up. I listen mostly to classical LP and CD. I control the HK with a remote extender. I know these old tweeters are a bit beamy and I have looked into replacing them with the JBL 035TiA, the direct upgrade. I've found a few on E-bay but they are rare and go for way too much. Any other suggestions?
