"Double Bass" cut-off frequency for Onkyo receivers

Im using the Onkyo TX-NR808. So lets say you set your mains to "Large/Full Range", the receiver then allows you to set Double Bass to "On or Off". My question is, if you were to select "Double Bass: On", then what frequencies are sent to the sub?

The only subwoofer crossover option in the menu refers to the LFE channel, and this only applies when using sources such as 5.1/6.1/7.1 etc. Changing the value from the 120Hz default has no effect.

I've sent Onkyo two emails asking about this, but that was over 3 weeks ago and still haven't heard anything back.

In the 'old' days when receivers had a single global xover setting for each channel and the Small vs Large setting was separate from setting the xover, I think it would use whatever xover frequency you set the main channels to.

Now that Large vs Small is specified simply by setting a xover frequency vs 'full band', I'm not sure what the answer would be. It could use a fixed xover point of 80 Hz or even up to 120 Hz or it could just send the entire full frequency range to the sub and rely on the fact that the sub has an upper limit after which it will naturally roll off all frequencies.

I'd like to know too, although I've rarely ever used the Double Bass feature.

It could use a fixed xover point of 80 Hz or even up to 120 Hz or it could just send the entire full frequency range to the sub and rely on the fact that the sub has an upper limit after which it will naturally roll off all frequencies.

It would make sense if there was an additional crossover setting that showed up with double bass enable. I haven't been able to find a definitive answer to this question for quite a long time...actually since I first got my Onkyo 601 almost 10yrs ago.

When the Double Bass Mode is selected it will send the low frequencies from the L/R fronts and Center to the Subwoofer Out jack. This is only available when THX is OFF and the subject loudspeakers are set to Full range/Large. Then the low frequencies are merged with the LFE, plus the low frequencies from any other loudspeakers set to Small such as the L/R surrounds..

The frequency X-Over point is whatever was selected for the LFE. For the other loudspeakers set to Small such as L/R surrounds their X-Over point is the matching low pass filter frequency to the set high pass filter frequency.

As I originally stated, this is simply not the case. Besides the manual specifically saying that the LFE crossover option ONLY applies to .1 material that was recorded with an LFE track, I have tested this by changing the LFE crossover. There is absolutely no effect.

How are you doing the tests?
By ear or instrument?
If by ear the changes are very subtle as the actual frequency points are
@ -3dB....

test tones at, above, and below the LFE crossover point. Have also done extensive "by ear" tests with the combination, I am confident that I'm not mistaken.
