dosen't sound right yet!

I am not sure this is the right place to post this, I have a Yamaha RXV 595A I didn't use this sound system in about a year, I noticed my Mirage 360 front speakers were shot, so I repaired them, the woofers needed the foam replaced, they are OK now, I spent the last 2 days trying different settings on the Yamaha receiver, and got no where, when we used to play some of the movies we would hear some special effects throughout the room, like a Helicopter flying through the air, you can hear the blades from the chopper go all around the room, never got to this point, not even close. is it possible my CD player needs cleaning or replacement. any suggestions. I tried to different sets of rears, not much difference.

I suggest you perform a "factory default reset" and start over with your setup. When I was trying to navigate through the setup menu on a Yamaha I set up for a friend, I must have made the wrong selection on something along the way and was very disappointed by the results. I dug though the manual to find the buttons to hold down during startup do reset all the menu settings to the factory default. Made a big difference and the final setup went very well.

I did a factory reset and it is much better, one thing I need to find out which setting to make adjustments to change is the sound from the front to the rear, like a helicopter scene in Transformers, I used to be able to hear it going through the room, have any idea what setting that might be so I don't going messing it up again.

Hi, Jake. What surround sound mode are you using? I'd suggest that you make sure that your disc player is sending the audio to the receiver as bitstream, and make sure that the receiver is set to the appropriate surround sound mode (such as Dolby Digital or DTS).

Yes my Yamaha RXV595A is in enhanced dd mode, DTS Pro Logic that I think is correct, as for DVD player sending in Bitstream, how would I check to see if I am doing this right.

Jake, the bitstream option would be in the DVD player's menu. There will probably be a "PCM" option and another option, probably called either "Bitstream" or "Dolby Digital" (or "DTS" for DTS output).

If you'll let me know the model number of your DVD player, I'll be happy to look up how to do it.

I would first suggest you level match all the channels with an spl meter, especially with a factory reset. Also make sure the correct speaker distances are set on the receiver and the right speaker size is selected.
Then, follow the other suggestions.

You'll want to set the Dolby Digital audio output to "Dolby Digital" and the DTS audio output to "DTS". You also want to connect to your receiver using a digital connection (either digital coax or optical).

Also, make sure your speakers are connected with proper polarity, and proper alignment (Left, Center, Right channel etc). This may seem rudimentary, but I made this mistake not too long ago, and didn't realize it until watching the incredibles and noticed that the helicopter flew across the screen to the left, but the sound went to the right.
