Ahh but thats the kicker... Do you have a Dolby TrueHD mode on your receiver?? Thats the thing that bugs me. Is it HDMI only, or if its upgradable will you player need firmware? My RX-V1300 has the ability to playback 2ch 96/24 audio but not 5.1 or 6.1...

For a major launch there is very thin info and would have liked to see more specs.

You bring up a very good point and I've been wanting to discuss this...if some cannot can tell the difference between an MP3 and WAV, and some cant' tell the difference between CD and SACD or DVD-A, then will we be able to hear a difference between DD and DD HD?

And to go one step further, some think you won't be able to see any real difference between 720P and 1080P so why bother with all this new technology anyway? Does a Denon 5805 in stereo mode sound any better than a Pioneer SX-1250 that's 30 years old?

Do we really need a new format that sounds better, or so it appears on paper, than what we already have? Is it just marketing to sell us more equipment or will it really make a difference in our home audio and video experience over what we already have?

OK lets go at it! ;)

Good point Mtrycrafts and Duff. In some ways we have already passed our ability to perceive the resolution of our entertainment toys. Take that portion of the electromagnetic spectrum that is visible and divide it into 10,000 segments. That’s about as good as the human eyeball get as far as distinguishing the differences between colors (shades, hues). The new generation of plasma displays are coughing up potentially 8-million+ colors. Great! 8,000,000 colors … of which I can discern only 10,000 of them. But it gets worse. 60% of the male population is color blind to some degree, can’t distinguish some portion of the visible em spectrum. So there is a 60% chance I am not getting the full benefit of the 10k colors I should be able to see. But just knowing 8-million colors are there, even if i can't see them, brings on a world of warm-fuzzy.

I agree ... I'll pass on that upgrade and wait for a full 3D surround system to be created. I mean really, I want to know if that bullet that just whipped by me on the right side was above my head or closer to my feet!

I dunno. They first built it in the 50’s, and no one has come yet.

All these increased resolution, be it audio or video is testable :D
I am not sure about the difference between 720P and 1080P, how visible that is and to what % of population. Obviously the commercial TV stations are screaming about bandwidth already ;)

The audio end, is bleaker. J Stewart of Meridian has stated 18 bits and 48k- sampling about it.
But, the ownbers of music or anything else probably want this to place on a HD DVD so it will look full whereas, a 16 bit 44k you need a bunch more music to fill it :D No way.

It sounds just like DTS24/96, of which A: There were no movies released with it, and B: I don't recall anyone even asking for it.

I'm guessing it'll be a "feature" that no one will ever need to lose any sleep over. I'd rather the studios put the extra time & effort into better HD video transfers.

Well after giving much thought I wonder, If it uses the same MLP as DVD-A then all the receivers capable of decoding DVD-A through HDMI should run the new format, it would just Show up as Dolby Digital... The other concern is bandwidth... HD content on cable is around 20Mbps (Comcast) reason being it that I believe its Mpeg 4 video. having the DVR there is no way 2Hrs of HD in Mpeg 2 would only take up 15% of a 120GB drive it would be more like 25-30GB or 22-27% space.

So if thats the case what happens when the needed bandwidth become 44.7Mbps (1080p + Dolby TrueHD??)

The video transfer process is key and there are plenty of example of this like The Fifth Element, etc. I'm very excited about getting a format of HD DVD to watch at 1080P but the new proposed audio formats only make me yawn.
