What is the difference in sound supposed to be between these formats and just using an optical cable to decode regular dolby digital and dts? I'm only interested in 5.1, not 7.1. Trying to figure out if I need to have a receiver with HDMI 1.3 to decode these formats or if there is no difference in the sound just cable clutter reduction. Please help me out on this. I don't mind using a seperate optical cable for audio.

Yes there is a difference and you can pass them only via HDMI OR via analog cables if you have a player and receiver that have multichannel analog in/out. You CAN pass both of them via standard digital (optical or coaxial) however, and it will be passed as a standard DD/DTS 5.1 signal as both of them are backwards compatible.
