Dolby True HD, DTS-HD and Dolby Digital Plus via 5.1?

With my new Blu-Ray player and Receiver, I am able to decode Dolby True HD, DTS-HD and Dolby Digital Plus. :) -- I think...

I have a 5.1 speaker system already installed and with the set-up of my room, I really can't add two additional with the proper spacing and angels for a 7.1 system, so I have to stick with my 5.1. (Or maybe go 6.1???)

So my question is, Can I get Dolby True HD, DTS-HD and Dolby Digital Plus sound through a 5.1 speaker set-up? And will I notice any difference from say regular Dolby Digital sound through 5.1 speakers? Any advice besides buying a new house with a bigger living room?

You don't need a 7.1 system to listen to TrueHD or DTS MA. So far most of the audio tracks in both formats are only 5.1. You do need either your player or reciever to be able to decode the audio format. Many people are perfectly happy with a 5.1 setup, it's seems to be mainly of matter of personal preference. So to answer the question, yes, you can get HD audio formats with a 5.1 system.

I find TrueHD to be much cleaner in sound than the regular DD. This is especially apparent to me in the lower frequencies with gunshots and explosions. There is much more to the report and the sound is less "boomy," basically much better extension.

I am completely happy with 5.1 HD audio.

Remember that the PRIMARY speakers are your front 3 speakers (plus the subwoofer), not your back/surround 4 speakers.:D

The Center speaker gets at least 50% of the soundtrack. So your front Left & Right probably get 30-40%. This only leaves your surround speakers with about 10% of the soundtrack.

If you have the room later (new house), you can play around with 7.1 HD, but 5.1 TrueHD, DTS-MA, or LPCM is fantastic.
