Dolby Pro Logic II sample sounds ?

Playing with my new receiver I must say that Dolby Pro Logic II is really fun and a a big step forward as compared to the original Pro Logic.

Now I just want to explore a bit further and put the system to the test, however … I can not find any “official” PLII encoded sounds, songs or samples. It works fine with almost every standard stereo content that I feed it, but I wanted to find out the “real” experience when fed a real PL II encoded sample.

Does anyone have any (links to) PLII encoded sounds, songs, samples ?

Regards, QubyB.

You probably won't find anything encoded for Dolby ProLogic II. Prologic II is designed to give surround sound like performance out of non digital sources (TV shows, VHS tapes in analog 2 channel). Dolby Digital is what you are looking for. Pick up just about any DVD, make sure your player is connected with some form of digital audio cable and away you go.

As Jon mentioned, this is not a recording format but an improved version of prologic. Any good 2 channel analog will benefit from logicII. It is not frequency limited in the surround sound as was the old prologic.

Is it you're a bit confused about Dolby Pro Logic II, Dolby Pro Logic IIx (expanding 5.1 sound to 6.1 or 7.1) and Dolby Digital Surround EX (encoding which is 6.1) and Even the new Dolby TrueHD....

Take a look at

http://www.dolby.com/consumer/technology/tech_overview.html

Lots of stuff there about Dolby technologies, and also lists of movies available in the different formats.

Hope it helps. Cheers!

I normally use DTS NEO to emulate 5.1 surround from a stereo source rather than Dolby Prologic II (dunno why, it seems a bit clearer to me). The thing that has always eluded me is when you're watching The Simpsons for example, it starts of displaying a little text saying "Presented in Dolby Surround where available".

So, what do they mean with this? They can't have encoded a true 5.1 Pro logic II soundtrack because as far as I know that doesn't exist. So all they're saying is "presented in stereo so if you have a nice receiver and a couple of speakers you can emulate 5.1 sound".

Am I wrong?

Dolby Surround is the encoding format. If the soundtrack was encoded using Dolby Surround, then the center and surround channels were purposefully matrixed into a 2 channel recording. PLII will extract those channels exactly as they were encoded. If the soundtrack was not surround encoded, then matrix decoders like PLII or Neo:6 can still synthesize center and surround channels but it may not be exactly the same as when it is surround encoded in the first place.

When programs on cable/sat say 'Presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 Where Available' (or anything similar) it means that such a stream is available from the network but your cable company may or may not make it available to you.

Ok thanks that helps a lot. So when something's presented in dolby surround (not digital) would it make much difference if I set the receiver on NEO:6 or Dolby Pro Logic II?

No samples so far ?

So ... so far no one has any (links to) PLII encoded samples?

To all the guys who thought I may be a bit confused ... I can assure you I am not. I know all the different formats and I know that PLII is nice to use on a plain good old stereo recording. Still ... I would like to have some "officially" PLII encoded sample signals, just for fun, maybe they exist somewhere.

AFAIK, there is no Dolby surround "not digital".

MDS: Am I misunderstanding something here or am I off target?

From the dolbylabs link above: 'Dolby Pro Logic II is fully compatible with all Dolby Pro Logic technologies. It provides optimal audio for playback in a 5.1-channel home theater system for the thousands of videocassettes and TV programs encoded in four-channel Dolby Surround (the encoding counterpart to Dolby Pro Logic's decoding technology.'
