dolby optical compatibility problem?

Hi,

I really hope somebody can offer me some help - I have a JVC TH-A35 home cinema system and an XBOX console that I would like to connect up in order to hear games in dd5.1. (I am in the UK).

Whatever I do and whatever I try, it doesn't work. The symptoms are that the JVC seems to detect the dolby digital input (the 'digital' indicator lights up and 6 speaker icons appear), but there is nothing but complete silence from all speakers.

I've tried two xboxes - the first one I took back to the shop just in case.
The second xbox I know works as I've plugged it into a friend's Sony DAV home cinema system and it worked fine.
The audio settings on the xbox are set correctly.
I've tried two optical leads, and two AV kits for the xbox.
Playing dvds on the xbox in dd5.1 (or dts) both come through the JVC fine.
I also use Sky+ digital satellite, which broadcasts some films in dd5.1 - these also come through fine.

It's just games on the xbox, which are silent.

I've thought about having the JVC tested for a fault, but I've seen posts on another forum with exactly the same problem with exactly the same model.

The only answer I have found so far, which I have been unable to trace the source of, is that the JVC will only accept dd5.1 signals from a US xbox as they didn't change the firmware on the JVC for the UK market. Obviously this only seems to apply to games, not dvds. I'm not an expert on this at all so I don't know if this can be physically possible or not.

JVC have been no help. I've also asked Dolby, who have offered some assistance but as have not been able to offer an explanation of why this wouldn't work.

I just wondered if anybody had any advice or experience of any of this that they may be able to offer. It would be really appreciated, as it is driving me mad.

Many thanks in advance,

John

Just a question...is your xbox modded? (chip issues/bioses/dashboards/etc. come into play then) As a suggestion you might also try to seek help over at the www.xbox-scene.com forums. Sorry I don't have an answer for you but when you find one please post it because I am curious as to what is going on.

No not modded, brand new and barely used (only had it 4 days). Thanks for the suggestion I'll check out the other site.

Cheers,

John
