DOLBY DIGITAL or DTS - Which is better?

Hi

Some DVDs have the option of either Dolby Digital or DTS.
Which is better? Ok...your going to say have a listen and let your ears decide.
I'll put it this way. Which do you Audioholics prefer to use if given the option, and perhaps a brief reason why you or the majority prefer one over the other.

Much appreciated :D

Hey Moonlight,

I prefer DTS because I think it sounds better. Back when they both came out, I recall reading a report that said that preferences of those studied were split about 50/50. DTS is less compressed, so in theory will be more true to the source material. On my system, I do think it sounds fuller.

DTS is 100% better way to go due to much higher bitrate - it's still lossy but if dd is equivalent of 128kbs mp3, DTS is 320kbps mp3

It depends on the bitrate, but if a DVD has DTS, then I tend to choose that. Standard DD and DTS are both basically outdated at this point though....

Thanks for your replies. :D

I have a Panasonic 34'' W/S (2002) Topfield SD 5000 PVR and an Onkyo SuperAudio DVD player, so without HD and a Blueray I'm not going to get the best audio going around.
My receiver is a Denon 3802 (2002)

While your here, I have just purchased a second sub and using an F connector from the back of the receiver, will probably use both, or the Jensen 10'' for movies and the twin 8s for music CDs? Will try them out.
Anyway, I'm wondering whether it is better to have the 2 subs at the same distance apart at the front, or is it ok to have one at the back (or side) of the room? Cable length at the front would be 2m and back 8m. Does it matter?

Cheers

DTS is better. It uses better compression algorithms. But after you hear lossless codecs like DTS-MA and Dolby TrueHD you won't care

Cable length doesn't matter. However integrating subs is tricky. One at the back / side may produce better results in fact. But you need to match SPL levels and time delay / phase in order to make sure both subs' bass is hitting you at the same time at the listening positions and smoothing out bass response.
