So i got the manual out tonight and started reading a little more about my reciever and then started messing around. I spent about 3 hours trying to get the on screen display to say the same thing as the picture in the manual. I cannot figure out how to get the night mode to work. According to the manual, it only works with dolby digital. I did what the manual said but the reciever will not display "dolby digital" where its supposed to. The same goes for DTS. I can get sound to come out of the speakers though. Anyone else with an HK that can chime in?

The problem isn't your receiver, its more than likely the setup on your DVD player. Well, lets check a couple of things first.

1. Are you using a coaxial or optical digital cable for audio? If you're only using the red & white rca inputs, you'll never get Dolby Digital or DTS from your DVD player.

2. On your DVD player you need to go into the setup menu and set the digital output to bitstream instead of PCM. You need bitstream to pass the DD or DTS signal to the receiver.

3. Many DVD players have DTS turned off. So you need to turn that on in the setup menu if there is an option for it.

I think "night mode" decreases the dynamic range you get from DVD's. It reduces the peaks and valleys of a recording. It makes sense that it only works with DD and DTS.

I have the H/K 630. You need to go into the onscreen display by pressing the OSD button towards the bottom right of your remote, and be sure your tv is on and you've got it on video. Once you see the blue screen you should be in the Master Menu and you're ready to make the adjustments. Use your scroll button and go down to In Out Set Up , and you will see it say Digital In , It will give you an option of Analog Or Digital, make sure it's Digital.I 'm not sure about other receivers ,but with the H/K you won't get it to say Digital on the receiver until you are past the menu screen of the movie or DVD-A you are watching. Like the Afro said ,be sure you have an optical cable, otherwise it won't say Digital.

If you still can't figure it out ,pay somneone to come over to make sure you have everything connected properly, and if you don't want to do that, the folks over at CC will be happy to help you out because they sell HK.

im not at all familiar with the h/k receivers but have seen plenty of cases of what afro was describing. i have even seen some dvd players that require you to take out all dvds before you can access the proper menu.
