Does your PS3 look grainy?

OK, so I have been having some difficulty with my PS3 as a Blu-Ray player. It seems to have a little extra grain then what I am expecting. When I have my HD Comcast box hooked up to my TV through the same receiver as the PS3 the HD channels look much better than the BD. The cable box is hooked up via HDMI as well the PS3, only difference is that the HD channels are in 1080i and the PS3 is set to output 1080p. I have tried to hook my PS3 up directly to the TV but the effects don’t lessen, so I am thinking it has something to do with the PS3. I don’t know if that is causing it or what, I can’t quite seem to figure it out on my own so I’m asking you guys for help please..

I know that all movies will have some grainy effects in them, and some movies look better than others. I have watch many movies from what people call tier 0, and tier 1. No matter the quality of the movie’s picture I can’t seem to get the grainy effects down to a minimum. It doesn’t bother me all that much but it’s kind of aggravating when my HD channels from Comcast look more clear than the BD’s

TV: Samsung LN46a650
Receiver: Sony STR-DG710 (In the procsess of upgrading as we speak)
PS3: 40G if it helps any..

:confused:Do higher end Blu-Ray player look better then the PS3?

Mine doessn't look grainy unless the movie was produced like that. I would say it looks much better than my HD Sat box.

Something's not right. I assume you are watching Teir 0 and 1 BDs suggested over at AVS Forum? Some will have grain as part of the film, but not every movie you watch. What are some examples of BDs you have watched with grain?

What are your HDMI and BD settings? Mine doesn't look grainy at all either. I have a number of the HDMI video settings set to automatic, like 1080p/24.

BD Video Output Format (HDMI): Auto
BD 1080p 24 Hz Output (HDMI): Auto
Vidieo Output Settings (HDMI): 1080i, 1080p

Does that answer your question?

I called Sony's 800 number and talked to one of their idiot costumer service people and they had no idea what they were talking about.

Grain is the very essence of film. It's the underlying base element that comprises the final image, similar to the brush strokes in a painting....

...or maybe you have an issue with unwanted video noise...

I know film is grainy. But when I play off the PS3 its MORE grainy then usual... today I borrowed a stand alone to compare the two. I used the Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead man's Chest, since we both owned a copy. i do believe on the other forums this would be a tier 0 title. One on my PS3 and one on the Sony BDP-S350. As I suspected the PS3 looked worse. The stand alone had grain but it was noticeably less then the PS3.

I don't think it would be electrical noise because, like i said before that the HD channels through my comcast cable box look much much less grainy then the BD. And those shows I'm sure are also shot with film;)

And I don't know what you are referring to when you say unwanted video noise.

I think something is wrong with yours, can you take it back?

Ok, so yesterday I go to Best Buy and I see that they have Monster Power conditioners. So since I have been having trouble with the grain of the PS3 picture I thought I'd get one and see if their "clean power" actually makes a difference. Well long story short the excess grain is gone from the PS3 and I have the sharpest picture I have ever had. I wouldn't recommend buying a Monster one because they are way overpriced but they do work. I'm so glad I didn't have to send my Playstation in for repair.
