A unit like 7008 definitely meets the THX standard.
I think Marantz felt their reputation was good enough that THX certification was not worth paying for.
Marantz, Denon, and Yamaha no longer get THX certification, but not an indication that they are lessor.

Out of Marantz and Onkyo I would definitely recommend getting Marantz unit. I have SR7008 myself and I have been really happy with my unit.

I have older Onkyo THX Ultra AVR which (knocking on the wood) still work great, but said my next AVR will be Denon just because Onkyo dropped the ball with Audessey support - which is MUCH more important than essentially useless (nowadays) certification

p.s: D&M Holdings - stands for - Denon & Marantz

Marantz has had better quality control than Onkyo. Onkyo were known for cooking their HDMI boards in the past. I don't know if they engineered this problem out of their current day products. I would choose Marantz until there is clear indication that Onkyo has tightened uo their QC issues.

Keep your eye on this THX one. If you can get it for $150-200 shipped I'd go for it. Keep a laptop cooler on it with air circulating out and you'll be fine: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Onkyo-TX-NR709-7-2-Channel-250-Watt-Receiver-/231518773036?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item35e7981f2c
or this one if you can get it for $375 or less:

Yep stay away from the newer Onkyo without Audyssey. If anything I'd go for the Marantz.

I have an Onkyo and have loved it so far. This thread is starting to make me nervous though.

No need to be just keep it in an open space and get a laptop cooler. I had mine for 2 years and no problems. I did extensive research and it worked for me. Remember air ciculating out.

This is the one I had: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0032R6CPU/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The usb part can be plugged right in front of the Onkyo.
