Does the carpet type matter?

I'm going to be purchasing carpet for my HT build within the next couple weeks and i'm curious if the actual carpet type will effect the sound in the room at all? The floor is the slab of the house (the rest of the house has terazzo floors 6 inches higher than the HT). As of right now I'm just going to do standard pad and carpet.

I've heard the berber type is good?

sound proofing and floating floors are out of the question for now. I'm just making sure that I don't end up with some crazy reflections from my carpet :).

Also, i was pondering having carpet put onto the wall about 4 feet up with a chair rail on the top of it and then paint for the rest of the wall. will this have any positive/negative effect on the sound?

After the room is complete and calibrated I'm going to start looking into treatments as well.

The thicker the better. Also, if you can do a moisture barrier and then a wool/jute based pad instead of the std foam, that will help extend it's absorbancy down a little farther.

I would not do that. Any carpet you get is really only going to hit the upper high end so the room is really going to get "out of whack". Actually I would not even put it on the floor, but I do understand that some people have to.

Currently the floor is bare slab. You caught me off gaurd with no carpet on the floor... why? What do you recommend as I can do wood or tile instead or something else. I thought the hard floors reflected the sound and negatively effected the acoustics and to prevent that you put down the carpet to be more absorbing.

Could you please explain your thoughts on no carpet at all, or point me to an article so i can learn more about the flooring. I will not put any carpet on the walls per your recommendation.

Some people have a preference for a more live floor and a deader ceiling. In fact, in a recording studio live room, this is absolutely the way to go.

You'll be fine with the carpet on the floor but I'd agree to skip it on the walls to avoid skewing the absorbtion curve of the room.
