I'm in the process of building a HT system. I have a Pioneer Elite plasma TV. I just purchased a Marantz SR5004 a/v receiver and a PS3. I have wired for 7.1 but I'm currently waiting for the UPS man to deliver my speakers and sub. So, I wanted to see what BDs at least looked like until the speakers arrive next week. I connected my receiver to my TV via the HDMI out on the receiver. I then connected my PS3 and satellite box to the avr with HDMI cables as well, all Blue Jeans cables. Upon powering up the receiver, it detected that the PS3 was on and started showing the home screen to that. I noticed that it showed only video and no audio.
So, my questions are:
1. Does the receiver only send video via the HDMI cable to the TV?
2. If so, do the speakers on the TV become essentialy useless?
3. I know my surround sound loudspeakers will sound better than the small speakers connected to the TV (actually they are removable), but do I always want to use the avr and it's accompanying surround sound?
4. I was thinking that for normal tv watching, the tv speakers would be fine, then if I wanted to really "watch" something, then I could use the avr and surround sound. Am I way off base here?
This is obviously my first receiver so I don't know how to use it yet. I will be really grateful for any help. Also, if I posted this in the wrong forum, please feel free to let me know or feel free to move it to the correct forum.
