Does anyone know the impedance of 80's-era original Baby Advents?

Been searching everywhere and cannot find a definite answer. Finding everything from 4 to 6 to 8 ohms. Please advise as I need to know if I can mix with 8 ohm speakers on my Onkyo AVR.

Thanks tons in advance!

The stated impedance of a speaker is it's "nominal" impedance, which is a fancy way of saying "average". Impedance varies depending on the frequency from anywhere from considerably below the "nominal" impedance to considerably higher.

Since the speakers will be in parallel and the receive sees half the combined impedance half the impedance of the two speakers, I'd go with the lower estimate.

The formula for what you want is (r1 X r2/r1 + r2) so, two 8 ohm speakers would equal a four ohm load on the receiver. A 8 ohm and a 6 ohm speaker would be 3.4 ohms.

Even without hard data I am going to post few educated guesses:
a) I personally doubt that back in 80s anyone seriously build 4oh and low efficiency speaker
b) Onkyo AVRs have typically robust amp section and you should have not problems driving almost any speaker to reasonable volume (driving 80s speaker at 100dba might be a wise move for longevity of both your hearing and vintage speakers
c) I am curious by what do mean by mixing? Using for specific channel? Surrounds for example get typically light usage, so probably ANY speakers would do just fine for surround/effects speakers duty.

MarkW thinks you might be crazy enough to plug speakers in parallel, if so - god speed to you and big thanks from AVR manufactures - as you would need a new one soon

Thanks all for the replies, have not been able to find out for sure what the original Baby Advents are anywhere!

By mixing, I am referring to already having 8 ohm front and center speakers, so I'm thinking I need to stick with 8ohms as rear speakers if I run 5.1.

That or if I go with running "Speakers A" and "B" at the same time on my non-AVR Marantz 2240; again - was always told NEVER run 8 and 4 ohms speakers on the same receiver at the same time.

Have you tested across the terminals with an ohm meter?

No, do not actually own them.

Found a pair for sale on CL for $80.00 but did not want to buy them if I am not 100% certain they can't be run as the "B speakers" on my recvr while my 8ohm "A" spkrs are also on.

I am running into less than bright CL sellers as I shop for a "B" pair of whatevers. The worse are the one who don't list any price - and then fail to even respond to the question as to whether or not the listed spkrs are still available to buy...

I'd revere what TLS guy said, he's probably correct about the 4 ohm load they likely nominally present. I would not use them with your 8 ohms speakers running simultaneously.

The way any AVR runs A & B speakers together is to use the same circuit to run both pairs in parallel. The circuit will be under a tremendous load to drive two sets of 8 ohm speakers (resulting load 4 ohms with two pairs of 8 ohm speakers in parallel), nevermind running it with a 8 ohm set and 4 ohm set on the same circuit. If you run them at any level above "chamber" levels you risk damage to the receiver.

OK, thanks all for the replies! Looks like no Baby Advents for me!
