Does anybody besides me like good old stereo speakers?

I like the sound from my 20 year old Cerwin Vega floor speakers with 12' woofers, however, they need to be reconed, or replaced.

I'm trying to decide to either replace them with bookshelf's with a sub, or just recone or replace the 12" woofers.

I just happen to love the smooth bass sound that these two CV's produce.

Am I alone out here, or has anyone else stayed with the good old floor standing speakers?

Does anyone know where I might get two 12" replacement woofers? I might replace instead of reconing.

Thank you,....marc

I still use my JBL L-88's which I bought used in '78! Used them for years as my mains, but after finding a pair of Pinnacle Decible 98's at a thrift shop this year, moved them to a surround position. I believe the Pinnacles are about 10 years old.

I like my 30 yo Criterion 2005, and only now thinking I need to either do a total rebuild or buy new. they are showing their age, and something has happened to one speaker where it just doesn't sound right. I did replace the 10" woofer about 10 years ago, using parts from Madisound.

Ohm Model L's

Yeah, I like vintage speakers. I built my own speakers in 1983. 2-way design with Audax 8"woofers and Philips poly tweeters. fried a tweeter and now looking for a replacement. I just found a pair of Ohm model L's on the streets in Albany, NY. They were being thrown out, nothing wrong with them except for a rotted foam surround. Got a replacement woofer from Ohm and they now sound great!

I'm still using my 26 year old Sansui SP6300's. But I'm getting nostalgic for my first pair of speakers and will probably buy a pair of Polk Audio Monitor 7's on Ebay.

Then I have to see if I can timber match them to a center.

I still have a pair of original Snell Type A's from the late 70's. I just recently gave in to the wife and put my smaller Snell K's in the living room. Since I have Dynaudio Contours in the theater room, the A's are just sitting idly by now. I hate to see them go. They're such a nice speaker. Guess I'll need to find a new home for them :(

I have D-5's and AT-12's. (both 12" woofer) I will never get rid of them. Too many years and memorys of hard rockin' fun to let go of that specific sound! I need to replace the foam on all four of them and the tweeter level controls on the D-5's but other than that they are still strong as ever. One of these days I will buy some new speakers but the C/V's will be in my drum room for when I want to relive the old days :D

Anyhow... What model C/V's do you have? Do you need new woofers or just the foams replaced? Cerwin Vega sell's replacements (at least the last time I looked) as well as you can buy the foam kits off of Ebay.

Any pair of speakers could be considered stereo speakers... I think the key word there is GOOD. I never considered CV good. My brother inherited my ancient towers, which were originally my dad's, that I rebuilt. They don't really have a name anymore, because I replaced the 10" drivers, but kept the mid & tweet. They sounded great for my first set of speakers, and they still do for a little bedroom setup, despite being about 30 yrs old.

Man this brings back memories of my childhood where my bro's all used Lafayette Criterion 2002+ speakers, turntables, and 40wpc pioneer receivers. It wasn't all that accurate, but nobody cared and the bass literally shattered my Dad's large wine bottle he used to keep on the kitchen floor.

My first "real" speakers were in high school and were the Cerwin Vega D-2s. Watching those red surround and Vega symbol on the cone flex was hypnotic.

I worked the the entire summer of my junior year bagging groceries at Publix to afford the much superior JBL LX-44 speakers and a 100wpc pioneer receiver.

I sometimes miss those days. Life was simplier and the music had more sole ;)

My CV AT15s just got demoted from HT use to zone 2 duty in the garage. My AT8s were also demoted and are now enjoying their retirement in the sun room.

I have to agree with gene. I sometimes think it was the old music that makes the

speakers seems soo dam good. you could actually sing to the music. Now we have Krap and you need to scream and screech and what not.. oh well i am just showing my age i guess.

Picture this. I just built a psycho light for an 8th grade science project. Set it near my brothers speakers so the mic can pick up the soundwaves and light up the dinky multi colored light bulbs for a cool strobing effect. I pop on Genesis Duke on LP. Crank the volume and enjoy the show. No screaming, no talk about gang violence or cop killing. Just mellodic lyrics, great drumming and chord progressions.

Now who is getting old?

I still use my Mac Xrt20s for my auditory pleasure. I still think they are hard to beat. I bought them about 20 yrs. ago. My uncle still uses his Altec "Voice of the Theatre" speakers he bought in the early 70's.

As far as the music, well remember what Bob Seger sings; "Today's music aint got the same soul. I like that ol' timey R & R"!

I just watched "Hollywood Homicide" last night. Harrison Ford goes up to a house that Gladys Knight is in and he tells her "I always thought you could sing better than Tammy Terrell" Later they are talking about today's music and Ford says "I can't understand it" She replys "YOU aren't supposed to".

I don't understand it, either. Since I'm old I guess Im' not supposed to, either. I agree, rikmeister, it's Krap.

It depends on which CV's IMO. CV made some good speakers in the "D" and "AT" lines but alot of subpar lines gave them a bad name and the company would have to preform a miracle to get me to buy speakers today. We are only talking "good" here not great and what I mean is for the money and how they are being used. My AT-12's for the money I paid were very good at hard rock/metal and are ok for HT fronts. Granted they are not good enough for me any more but i can see how others could be very happy with the better of the CV's

Give him time, I've been lurking around this sight for a few months now and the infection has just started to set in, he'll be along shortly. :D

I agree. I listen mainly to bluegrass. I play and sing myself. I can make a recording, play it back on my speakers, and it sounds like I'm playing right there. There is still good music. It's just harder to find. I was initally impressed by the bluegrass selection on Napster and I subscribed to the service. Now, nearly a year later, there has been no new bluegrass content and I am considering dropping the subsription. :(

Before my car got totalled, my stereo was this.

2 Pioneer HPM-500's with duct tape surrounds and a pioneer Head unit.

My Dads still has his stereo, and all still works. Hes 50 so its pretty old stuff.

Pioneer HPM-100's and a technics reciever with phono inputs and a separate tuner, digital too. Now thats high tech. Those pioneers sound great, bass response down to 30hz, and hard wood enclosures. Weigh about 100 pounds a peice.
