Does 5.2.4 make sense here?

5.2.4 was always my intention.

I've got 5.2.2 installed now and I've watched a couple of Atmos coded movies in my own space...I like it. Rain hitting a metal roof, and a helicopter flying overhead was very realistic sound.

Now I'm thinking about taking the 2 Polk RC80i in ceiling that I was going to put in the master for whole house and going ahead with 5.2.4. I'll get another pair for the master or a pair of Noble Fidelity 6".

What is giving me pause...from the main seating, if I drew a straight line from my head to the ceiling and marked that spot...the front heights are about 3.5' forward of that position and about 8.5' from the back wall.

I can put the rear heights about 12" off the back wall...will I gain much benefit from them?

No one is going to really know for sure what will occur under those conditions. You will have to try it. I think the effect will probably be modest. But if you don't, you will always be curious, and it will be a itch that you can't scratch until you do it. You know what you have to do.

Personally I would, the distance differences aren't an issue, setup will take care of that, and the difference between x.x.2 and x.x.4 is quite substantial when you have a sound that actually pans around and above you instead of just over you in one direction.

Agree on both counts...Of course I was already on the edge...Since I don't have to fish any wires down the wall, I'll probably have them in by tomorrow if I have enough speaker wire for 2 runs.
