Check the "gain value" on your manual. The input impedance should be high (desirable), and the ouput impedance should be low at the preamps output (desirable). With an amp rated at 10 kohm (12 kohm even better) input impedance or more, it's a good sign of a greater match with more pre/pros or receivers with preouts. Same for a powered subwoofer. And yes, the volume control (gain level) is directly affected by it. And on the amps, you want a good input impedance with preferably a gain for each channel to match the pre-pro. And a high gain (input impedance) for some receivers with preouts.
