Do I really need to upgrade???

Hello all. I have been searching and reading and can't really find an answer to my question so I figured I would post.

I am doing some upgrading after my Rear Projection TV shot out on me. I purchased a new Plasma screen and started looking at other parts of my A/V system. I currently have a Yamaha HTR-5550 receiver which I have no problems with. Since it doesn't have any HDMI connections I will have to rely on the Component and Optical connections. I never really setup a surround system with my system, just 2 floor speakers and a center channel. With the new TV, I am probably going to be changing speakers up also, but that is a topic for another thread :D. Anyway, any suggestions or thoughts would be helpfull.

Thank you in advance.

It would really depend if you would need another receiver. Unless you are planning on buying a Blu-ray or HD DVD player any time soon I don't see a point of upgrading the receiver. Work on new speakers first if that's the case.

So why would I need to upgrade even with a Blu Ray or HD player? I have component hookups on the receiver and my understanding HDMI is subjectively better than component.

Yes but you can only get high def sound from hdmi (TrueHD, DTS-HD/MA, Uncompressed PCM).

Seriously, I have no life.

You may not get the full HD video on component, only on HDMI. But, you could go to the TV direct and use coax for audio DD+
