I am looking to upgrade to a 42" or 46" Panasonic plasma tv. I have no want or desire to upgrade my cable service to get HD channels, I don't see in the near or distant future getting any type of Blu ray player or PS3.
So do I really need to get a HDMI tv?
Do I also need to upgrade my receiver Yamaha RX-V1400 to go along with a new TV?
Thanks for any info anyone may have.

No you don't need it. It's just a convenience solution.

If you're not planning to watch HDTV or get a Blu-ray player, why buy a Plasma at all? That's like buying a Ferrari, but refusing to take it out of first gear.

sadly enough, i know people just like that :(

anyway, i agree. Might as well just stick to your old TV, and spend the money on a ferrari :O

unless you just want a bigger screen, of course ;) but then everyone will probably HD HIGHLY. The difference is mind-blowing.

There may be some other possiblilities here. Just what kind of TV signal are you getting now, cable, sat/TV?? And how do you want your vidio signal, S-Vidio, componate, RCA? You do not need HDMI to have a good picture, my wife is usng S-Video, and has a great picture, so she is not interested in HD, and her DVD player looks like regular HD, not blue ray of course. A good quality TV can give you a very good picture and you always have the HDMI there if you change your mind.:)

Just a bigger screen

Right now I get digital cable to my 27" JVC.
Everything is hooked up using component video. Cable box to tv and dvd player to tv all using rbg cable
All I'm really looking to do is get a bigger TV.
What would be recomended?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jvc 27 inch TV
Motorola DCT 6416III Cable recorder running just digital cable
Panasonic DVD-F87 DVD player
Sony CDP-CX 355 CD player
Sony PS-T15 turntable ( for my 300+ record collection )
PSB Image 7PT for my fronts
Athena C.5 for my center
Athena WS-100 for my rears
Athena S.5 for my presence sound
Athena PS-P6000 for my sub
Yamaha RX-V1400

By rgb cable I'm assuming you mean component cable?

I got by just fine without HDMI for quite some time. I still use component from my cable box to my TV. It gives, arguably, as good a picture as HDMI.
The biggest advantage, IMO, is HDMI's ability to carry the HD audio signals from a BD player to a HT receiver. At this point HD audio is not available thru cable or satellite.

Somewhat off the subject; The picture quality will depend on the scaler in the TV you buy. Some SD broadcasts look horrific on my RP CRT, sports in particular.

I do agree with some that it would be a waste of money to invest in a HDTV without the investment of an HD source. But that investment doesn't need to be a BD player. Check out your cable company's HD offerings. I still find the some of the HD broadcasts to be amazing.

If you are useing cable and its Digital service you will get a few channels in HD for free but Comp video cables are just fine for HDTV, HDMI is really only an issue to those who want a simple way to wire system and/or those who want latest in sound technology from HD video disc on Blu Ray and the recently murdered HDDVD format. There is no need to upgrade your audio reciever if you are happy with its audio, the video is irrelevant because even if your current reciever doesnt support Comp video which makes it easy to operate everything you would only need to wire video direct to your new TV. So go ahead and get the new TVm even if you dont want or care about HD now, you or somebody you know will and you will want to be ready for it.
