I just bought a Mits WD65C9 DLP TV - it has 3hdmi and 1 optical. I have a YamahaRXV-659 w/ NO HDMI. Do I need an optical run from TV to Yamaha for Audio? Otherwise, how would I get sound?

What are your audio/video sources and how there connected to TV now?

If I guess correctly, you want the sound from the TV to be played through your HT setup. It looks like your set has digital coax and RCA outputs. Either one hooked to your AVR will work. I don't see an optical output on the picture of your set on the Mitsubishi website. Regardless, the other two outputs should be fine if I was looking at the right model.

If you are trying to get sound from something like a BluRay player, you will have to use something other than HDMI (see options above) to get sound through your HT.

It's going to depend on your signal sources as has been said.
I had the 659 and I used optical from the cable box to the receiver and out to the speakers. I used component for the video signal from the cable box direct to the tv.
For my Sony BD player I ran the hdmi cable from the player directly to the tv and audio from the player to the receiver.
No Dolby HD or DTS HD but it sounded fine.

Sorry- I didn't explain it thoroughly. Cable, DVD, and XBOX will hookup directly HDMI to TV. My question is how do I get the best sound hookup?

The 659 (one of my favorite AVRs of all times) has plenty of optical "ins" if I remember correctly. Just use them for all components on the audio side and use HDMI for the video directly to the display. You won't even miss the new codecs.

If I use HDMI from DVD to TV and HDMI from Cable box to TV, don't I need either digital coax or dgital optical from TV to receiver to get the best sound?

The optical jack on your tv is an output, it's used when you get your tv signal from antenna, and allows you to pass 5.1 from your tv to a receiver.

1 last question: All 3 sources, XBOX, DVD, and Cable box have HDMI running to the back of TV with digital audio on XBOX, DVD and Cable box all going to receiver. MY QUESTION: Do I need a digital audio cable going to the receiver?

Hey Roger, I have a very similar setup as what you have. I use the same receiver, have a Samsung dlp, Blu-ray player, and satellite receiver. I use HDMI from satellite receiver to tv, HDMI from Blu-ray to tv, and I use an optical cable from satellite receiver to the AVR (although not sure now why I didn't go from tv to AVR). It works just fine this way.
