Do I need a preamp?

Hi all,

This is my first post. I'm looking for some help/suggestions. I have recently decided to set up my basement for my entertainment. I am kind of lost as I am new to this stuff. I just purchased a pair of TSC TST3 speakers, and a Behringer A500 amp. My plan is to only hook up a CD player to these. Can I hook the CD player up directly to the amp? Do I need a preamp? I also have a Yamaha RX-V665 that will run my 5.1. Should I run the CD player through there and pre out to the amp? Any help or suggestions would be great. This site has been my daily stop since I came across it.

Yes.

You could connect the player directly to the amp, but you'll have to mess with two separate volume controls.

Wayne

Thanks for the reply. You say if I connect my CD player directly to the amp, I will have two seperate volume controls to deal with. What would you suggest I do then? Go through my HT receiver?

That would solve the dual volume problem, and so is an option.

So would I gain anything by using for instance an emotiva preamp as opposed to my v665 receiver? $350 is about the top of my price range at this point.

I'd save your money and use the yammy you've got. I'm guessing you could use the zone2 preout for the behringer. Thats what I would do.

Thanks. Using zone 2 was my original plan but I honestly just didn't know for sure that it was doable. I will set it all up tonight and try out the speakers (and everything else for that matter). Unfortunately I am in the process of finishing the basement, so everything is still in boxes and will need to be temporarily set up in order to test the speakers during their trial period.

Everything is working nicely through the receiver into the amp. Thanks again.
