Just looking for some opinions. I've always loved their higher end ESL's, just seeing if anyone else likes them.

Have a ML servo sub

I have the Grotto sub. Excellent performer within the limits of a 10" sub. On music it sounds great - very tight and goes low, for HT it's decent but it's not a Descent. It'll rock the furniture a bit with LFE it just can't shake the foundation. The small package and nice style have a good WAF.

Eric,

What did you think of your Grotto compared to the Depth? Is your single 10 more potent than triple 8's? I'm thinking of getting a Descent if I can find one reasonable priced.

....Buck, I would think multiple small elements would make for quickness/accuracy, and would lean to a music application.....

I think the Depth hit harder, but it was out of budget. I wondered about corner placement as well with two firing into the walls. Thought that might be an issue. I would also guess the Depth sharing three drivers would be less likely to bottom on LFE since it splits the power 3x - but didn't get to try. As far as accuracy, I don't really appreciate much of a difference sonic wise between them. They both do sound much more accurate then many subs. I can really hear a bass drum getting thumped by the player, rather then just the drum thumping (if that makes any sense). I guess I can hear the hit, and not just the boom. Also, I'd guess the Grotto meets it's low end specs in the low 20's. It'll get moving with no sound coming out, just a sort of pressure you feel.

Now the Descent, it's a rather large step up. Hits much harder but still in control - great musical sound and the guts for some powerful HT. Not much of a contest there, get the Descent if $$ no matter.

I was thinking about going with 2 grottos' or one descent, I would be running them with paradigm s4's. My primary concern is musicality, while still being able to pull off decent HT effects. My listening habits are about 60/40. Would anyone with any expierience with dual ML subs or owners/demo users of the grotto or descent like to share their thoughs and or expierience with either of these subs? Money is not too much of a concern, I would be upgrading my seismic 12. It would cost me about $500 to go with 2 grottos' or $1000 for the descent. I rather like the idea of having two subs set up beside/behind my S4's. I'm interested in solid non-localized punch more so then deep room shaking bass. Any comments would be appreciated.

Ascent Closeout Sale this weekend

FYI... ML is discontinuing the Ascent i, and the Tweeter's Chain (and affilitiates) has them on sale this weekend for ~$3000/pr (retail was $4500). Apparently there is a new model coming out end of year to replace them, but rumored to be ~$5000/pr.

I run two subs - only one is a Grotto. Musically, both ML subs are great.

The Descent plays lower then the Grotto IRC around 3-5hz, and has 3 10" drivers. That should give a better LFE effect then 2 10" drivers. But, the two Grottos give you more options (and potential issues) placement wise. Using two really gives you options to spread the sound field for a higher cross over freq. Another consideration the Grottos are maybe 1/2 the size of the Descent, and are much less obvious in the room.

I think punch wise I'd go with the Descent, but two Grottos will hit really well too - I think a bit less then the Descent because of the displacement difference. Cost wise and hiding wise, the Grotto's have an edge.

Welcome to the forum.

Where are you finding these subs for that price? I'm assuming that's with trade in, right?

Thanks for the replys, yeah those prices are after trading in my seismic 12. I'm really haveing a hard time deciding on which route to go as they wont take trade-ins on two subs for one if I go with the grottos, im kinda stuck with them, and they dont have a Descent for me to audition at Stereoland in Minneapolis so I can't give it a listen. the reviews are excellent for the Descent but I dont think I found a single review on the grotto. hmm someone want to make the decision for me? I would like to put in an order for them or one tomarrow but im still undecided.

I can't speak for the Grottos, but I've auditioned the Descent (along with just about everything in high end stores in Columbus, OH and Dallas, TX. The Descent is my ultimate goal for a subwoofer. It's that good. If you haven't heard one, you owe it to yourself to have a listen.

The dcent is a good subwoofer but the only problem with martin logan is that they do not make a good center speaker.

Well I'll be running the Descent with my paradigm s4's, C3 center and studio ADP's so I won't run into that problem. what I am wondering though is if anyone has seen the various trim pieces for the Descent. I was hoping to match the cherry finish on my paradigms. The dark cherry looks, well too dark, the Natural cherry seems to be pretty close. If anyone has seen the cherry trim piece and the cherry signatures at the same store please let me know what you think.

Your ML dealer should have all the trim options for you to look at.
