DLP or LCD

I have just finished my basement and need to choose a Home Theater package. I built a riser and purchased 6 recliners. I had the room prewiredfor 5.1/7.1. There is an accessible area behind the viewing wall. So I can recess a DLP if I go that route. Here are my room specs:
Room Width: 13' 3"
Room Length: 21
Ceiling Height: 8' 7"
Wall to Row 1 Head Height: 10' 6"
Wall to Row 2 Head Height: 16' 6"
I want to watch football, movies and some broadcast tv.
Which TV should I get?

Hello Swatto, what is your budget? Getting a LCD large enough for viewing from 16 feet will be a challenge. Is plasma a viable alternative? DLP may give the best performance for the price. Steven Mazer has a 74 inch DLP and might be able to give advice.

The Mitz DLPs are really nice. I have one plus a plasma and LCD and the Mitz looks as good as the other two.

The Mitz DLPs are really nice. I have one plus a plasma and LCD and the Mitz looks as good as the other two.

Really nice big budget = front projector, with plasma behind screen
Nice big budget = front projector
Nice big budget #2= Sony XBR-2 SXRD 70" if you can find one
Nice big budget #3= largest 65"+ plasma you can find
normal budget= DLP

I don't like LCD displays. Except for Sony/Samsung maybe, but you pay more for less, IMO.

I have a 61 inch DLP 720P and I set about 12 feet from it. It works well but I would still like it bigger. When you get to larger sizes, DLP seems to be more picture for the money, except maybe a projector. DLP picture quality is good, or good enough. It sounds like you don't have a projector option. If so DLP could be a good fit to your situation. At 16 feet, I would go as big a DLP as you can get and still afford.

I use an Optoma 79HD (720p)(DLP). The screen is 100"x42". It's a CIH system using a CAVX panamorphic lens to get the 2.35:1 image.

I've had it for about a year and I'm very happy with it. I sit about 10 feet from the screen and I can't see pixel structure or the holes in the AT screen material. Very happy.

FWIW the Optoma is damn quiet. I sit about 6 feet from it and never hear it.

Swatto, if front projection is out, then a large 73" Mitsubishi rear-projection DLP is the best option for your viewing distances.
