What is the best home use dvd or program for calibrating a DLP under $100?
Or, should I pay Best Buy the sale price of $200 for them to calibrate it?
Is calibrating a DLP any different than other types?
No, do not pay BB. *IF* the BB guys knew what they were doing, AND you didn't have a bulb based system (because you have to calibrate much more often than you would with say plasma or lcd), then maybe. But not in this case.
DLP is not really different; it's the "projection system" with quickly dying bulbs that will have your PQ change more quickly.
Otherwise, it's about the actual model+brand. Some have more flexible calibration tools, and some don't. To delve deeper into color, one often has to get into the service manual, which enthusiasts may be comfortable with, but would rarely recommend to a noob out of fear of destroying the display.
I own Avia, DVE, and Spears/Munsil. The DVE will be easier to understand, but I now like the Spears Munsil Benchmark. If you decide to go that way, Stacey Spears actually posted some very good instructions here at AH.
The next level would be to run search functions at owner's threads, and see what kind of SM settings they have, but of course take with salt, as there is unit to unit variation, different ambient light levels, especially different bulb ages, and they may be an enthusiast and not a pro.
Beyond that level, you get into additional software, colorimeter/spectroradiometer, laptop, hardware, etc.
